I've tried that rb...it doesn't work for beans. I even used a script to remove all materials from the existing model so I could clean up the file...then attempted every purge in the book...none removed the lengthy list of materials in the model. I can remove them one at a time, but that would take an eternity...anyone have any better idea?

I've been using TIG's Purge All since it came out. Works fine for me. Are you sure you have it installed in the right place with the .rb extension?
It's one of the most used plugins in my collection.

It sounds like Gypsy wants a purge script that removes the used materials as well as the unsued. This is no longer a purge really. Purgeing generally refers to removing UNUSED materials. So if you are running TIG's purge_all script wanting it to remove materials that are being used by the model, it won't do that. Thats just not what its supposed to do.
Instead, keep following the thread posted in that second post above and there is a link to smustard's remove materials plugin. That will go through and remove all materials from your model and then purge them from the materials list.
Chris
EDIT: actually it looks like that script just removes them from the model. You will then need to purge them yourself.
