I don't know, maybe it just me. sometimes, i have problems move my componants to where i want to, because inference points are too far apart in the space.

You can move things in several ways. My mouse, by keyboard, and by Ruby script.

Is your issue more of one of getting the object to snap where you want it, or more of a "the distance is too great" issue? Or, something else?

Might be worth trying this: window->preferences->drawing then tick the box which says 'click-move-click.'

Do you mean that you don't have the component to follow the cursor as it's moved? That you pick two points and the selection is moved with the same offset as the two points?

I have had this problem once or twice, but as Todd says it is usually because there was a huge distance between the "component" and what I wanted it to attach to.
I recently had one file though where the damn thing wouldn't use inferencing no matter what I did.
In the end I took my tape measure tool, and drew a guide between component A and component B, and component A followed the guide to where I wanted it to go. I don't know why this happened, as it usually doesn't, or why the guide worked, but it did.

I had an issue once with moving something from way out in never-never land back towards the origin, and I kept fighting with it. Finally, in frustration, I wrote MoveToOrigin (http://www.smustard.com/script/MoveToOrigin). That solved that problem.

thanks guys, todd and dale for your ideas. problems expressed in last two treads are what frustrating me. i use sketchup to do timber framing detailing. A few times in a model, i cann't move my timber componants into position easily because of distance issue. (i also had the same experiences with dale.

                      anyway, nothing major.

i have seen some programs like Cheifarchitect have such ability.

                        Hey Todd

Do you think that script would work if I attached it to my banking transactions?
Then after I paid my bill it could just move my money back! πŸ˜’

                          Builder,

In case you are not aware, there is a Glue feature in SU.

If a selection is giving me problems while trying to move it, I'll right click on it to see if "UNGLUE" is available in the context menu. If so, then I'll do an Unglue.

Moving or drawing geometry across large distances can be tedious. A method I often forget to practice, but which is very helpful, is to zoom into the "target point", then Zoom to Extents, then zoom to your "start" point, select your geometry or intiate a drawing tool, then utilize the "Zoom Next" and "Zoom Previous" functions available in the Camera Toolbar.
