3D warehouse - can't use model
-
Has anyone else gone to get something from the 3d warehouse to find that the model you want is only available as a KMZ or Collada file, neither of which are usable in sketchup 7 ?
I was able to convert the model using blender, into 3DS then import it into sketchup but... Why do I have to do this when I am downloading from sketchup's 3d warehouse.
Did I miss something, Is there an easier way that I am just to stunned to figure out.
Thanks for any help.

For the most part stuff from the 3d warehouse is available in .skp format, im not sure why some of it is only available in collada/kmz. Seems like a strange choice, as you said.

I assumed that the only reason some models were available in the kmz format was because the owner didn't want to share the skp file.
If someone posts the skp file then anyone can use it, edit it and pass it off as their own. If you just share the kmz file then it's made far more difficult for others to take.

Then why share at all?

Because they want to get their stuff on to google earth, perhaps. Still seems a bit strange though, as i understand its fairly easy to set your model to private, so other people cant look at it.

Yeah, it's a GE thing. Also, some have glitches with uploading from SU and this is the way they "share" their content.
Remus; that share/hide function is relatively ne in the WH so the onlykmz option was earlier.
