More Customizable Toolbar

Like most folks, I assign keyboard shortcuts to certain functions. To save screen real estate and to allow for the addition of more custom icons, I would like to eliminate those native icons for which I have assigned a shortcut. Is it possible to break apart the toolbar "boxes" into individual icons which could be eliminated?
EDIT: I meant to post this in the regular discussions forum. Could a moderator move this there?

I (modestly) suggest Custom Toolbars - it's easy to set up; just look in the Plugins/Toolbars folder for examples. Sounds like it's just what you need.
