Everybody was so helpful here and put up with my newbishly dumb questions that I decided to come back and ask another newbishly dumb question!

I'm wondering if anybody can point me in the direction of a nice terrain modeling tutorial. I don't really want to model terrain from real life, but I do want to be able to create terrain from scratch.

      Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you and Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

        Hi Saucy,

When just playing around the terrain tools (note that you need to activate them from the Window > Preferences > Extensions tab), the best way is to use the "From scratch"
        http://download.sketchup.com/sketchuphelp/gsu6_win/Content/Z-images/P-Terrain_Modeling/terrain-FlatTerrainLarge.png
        and the "Smoove"

        tools.

After you create a flat TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network), which will look something like this with the "From scratch" tool:

you can double click the group that contains it, and apply the Smoove tool to create an undulating, hilly-billy terrain that you can keep modifying until you are happy with it.

        "In action"

        "After creation"

(Note that I'm using the images provided in the SU User Guide for version 6 - always read the bottom lines to find out how to specify different values with each tool)

        Gai...

Here is a good video from the BaseCamp series. It is "advanced" but it will give you some good ideas about how the tool is used in models.
