I've attached a simple 3D object. I would like to create an animation with a fixed camera position, and have the object rotate about its vertical axis. If someone can point me to a good tutorial to accomplish this, please help. I've tried and tried, without any success.

    Newbie here....

One method I have used in the past:

      1. Create 36 scenes
      2. Create 36 layers
      3. Create 36 copies of the object placing 1 copy of the object on each layer
      4. Rotate each copy of the object by 10 degrees
      5. Use the scenes to turn the layers on and off one by one

If there are objects that are static and do not move then put them on layer 0 and leave layer 0 turn on for all scenes. It's quite labour intensive and there is probably a better method but that's what I did.

PS. Make sure your object is a component NOT a group. That way if you change the component all copies are changed as well.

See all of my SketchUp models here.

Try the MorisDov Plug "Proper Animation" works fine in the V 7
So load it and copy the file proper_animation.rb inside the Plugins folders
        Theory
With your Component, you must change the Axes (Right Click / Change axes) and put on the axe of rotation wishing

        So Create 3 Scenes
Your object can now take 3 positions (different than the positions of the scenes who are the positions of camera!!!
In the first scene Select your Object, place it as you want, Update the scene,
        Right Click/ Transformations/ Set position 1
Rotate the object Right Click/ Transformations/ Set position 2
Rotate the object Right Click/ Transformations/ Set position 3
et voilΓ  β˜€ : Menu Plugins/ (enable) Start Animation Observer
        Play Animation!
Your object will rotate on it-self (if the rotation's axe is in the middle of it)
with any movement of scene's camera!!!
In my file there no Camera movement: if you want some, just "Up date Scene" after a camera's movement
        Very funny plug β˜€
After the "setting positions" it's better to save the file , exit the prog and reload it!
        ( a sort of refresh)
Of course Object can take any position not only rotation πŸ˜‰

Here follow all is made for you πŸ˜„ (Assuming the fact that Proper Animation plugin is installed!
So load the file, Menu Plugins/ Start Animation Observer
Play Animation! (Menu View/ Animation/Play Animation don't hesitate to press the button Play many time))
        See this thread πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the help, folks. I'll start with the basic method shared by Hazza... then I'll work on Pilou's suggestions. I'll let ya'll know what progress I make. (will be a few days)

            Cheers,
            Wade

I tried this method suggested by Pilou, with Proper Animation. I did all of stepps mentioned by him, but to make things move i have to check option "Start scenes observer" and click on each scene. Only then the object moves.

Also when i try to export my animation (File/Export/As animation/Movie) the object dont move at all...
              Any suggestions?

In fact you have a more easy Plugin! β˜€
                Mover by Cmd! πŸ‘

                See my little video πŸ˜‰
(sorry in French but very visual ! πŸ˜„

In the Link you have also some very useful Plugins : Mover2 (for move by the keyboard) and axes tools for easy placements of axes of a component(s)! 😎

Maybe your axes of the component are not at the middle x,y,and bottom z?

Use axe tool by Thomthom ! A very cool plugin! (Center, Center, Bottom)

Mover2 is just useful for make a precise movement better than the mouse, it don't make any animation! πŸ˜‰

For this animation normally 3 scenes are sufficient!
