To help contribute to Sketchup's ever increasing functionality, should us non-programmers try to learn Ruby?
I am sure that I'm not the only user who requests rubies while having no idea of what is involved in creating them.
I think what I'm trying to say is what sort of skill level is needed to make a useful contribution to Sketchup? Is learning Ruby time well spent for the average SU user or should we leave it to the pros?

I would suggest if anyone has the interest then it would be a great thing to learn.
For me, the thought does not appeal, although I find Rubies fantastic!
I am sure it is a pretty steep learning curve but could be very rewarding once it starts to make sense.

If start from nothing, maybe also a great big free time is also necessary 😉

I once had a go with a little program called 'processing', that uses some sort java language (at least I think that was what it does).

the great thing about the little software was, that you could type in some lines and then immediately hit the run button to test the script. it hat lots and lots of example scripts, sorted in different topics and a very detailed online help file.
this little program made it even for me as a programming noob possible to create some cool results.

I once Googled if there was the same software with ruby. and indeed I found this...

but somehow I never got it to work and eventually gave up.
if there is anyone who knows how to get this Ruby-Processing to work, I would be forever grateful, because I am sure that could be the trigger for me to actually learn ruby. after all, programming with the Processing software was absolute fun!!!

I imagine that as well as the academic skill, programing requires a certain aptitude.

I think the greatest danger is to lose oneself in programming until you can't stop thinking like that...

if 'time the cinema starts' > 50 min then 'prepare proper dinner'

                  else 'prepare ready made pizza'

I actually went to a RUBY seminar at the first 3D Basecamp. I thought it would be a nice thing to have so I could create my own little scripts. I thought I walked into a physics tutorial. It was so over my head. . ..the instructor must've assumed that we were all somewhat already familiar with Ruby Language. NO!!! So, While I would be interested, I think my time and effort are better spent just plunking down a few bucks for the genius you guys come up with. 💚

I'm a semi-retired programmer, and I've been planning to pick up Ruby ever since I started using them in SU. I'll soon be fully retired, and then I'll have the time.

Do any of you Ruby guys have a decent write-up on the API? 🎉

Sorry Tezer for this (and others for being OT) but I coulnd't stand posting this:

When I was reading the word "semi-retired", I actually read "semi-retarded" and although immediately saw that I was wrong, I started laughing just to make the same mistake when I go to "fully retarded".

I don't know what's wrong with me today (maybe wek-end is coming) but I just see jokes all around.

I remember a while back (@last days) I thought i'd get into this whole ruby thing, I realised quickly that I am not wired that way and gave it up as a real bad idea. I salute those that can stare at numbers and letters for hours and arrange them into sequences that actually do more than just "Hello world". I will stick to using those strings of code instead for creating art instead.

I actually bought this book a while back - http://www.amazon.com/Ruby-Way-Second-Addison-Wesley-Professional/dp/0672328844 thinking I was going to learn the Ruby language, but I haven't had the time to dive in. From what I've skimmed through, it seems like a good book for anyone interested in scripting.

                                          Guys,

I'm with Pete on this. My eyes glaze over when I start reading
                                          this stuff, scripts.

However there may be another way for us graphic orientated people
to get into programming. Imagine if we could do it in a 3d
                                          environment! Well we can!

                                            Hi Jon,

I'm afraid Alice went onto my 'Maybe Some Day' shelf. I occasionally
check out the site to see if they have launched V3. But to date there
is no move in this direction.

I still feel that Alice has potential as a good good 'learning' tool for
guys that find it difficult to play with loads of figures and symbols.

I hope to put Alice onto the 'Maybe Some Day Soon' shelf when V3
comes along. Hey, check out what it will be offering, cool!
