I have constructed a series of arches by copying and adding them together and then formed them into a group. I now find that two of the arches are not quite joined and I want to ungroup them to make the adjustment. How do I get them out of the group?

You don't have to ungroup. Just double-click on the group to edit inside it. When done, click outside the group to close it.

...and if you do ever need to get rid f a group, right click the group->explode.

Many thanks -- It worked. However I have a Mac and no right click on my mouse. How can I get to the explode menu?

Get a mouse with three buttons (the wheel being the middle button).

Otherwise (I think) Option+Click on Mac - or select the group > Edit (menu) > Explode. You can also asign a shortcut key to it.

              Gai...

If I remember right, on the Mac you control-click to get the context menu.

If you are using a Mighty Mouse instead of an old-style one-button mouse, it can be configured to right-click from the mouse control panel (it has two front buttons under the hood, they are just set the same. Also, pressing the scrolling ball can be made to activate Orbit instead of the Dashboard (who uses that anyway?)
