Problem with drawing?!

Hi, I'm not newbie, BUT also not professionalist and I'm having the following problem:
How can I make sings like these http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=8e35eb89d8eb2a37e9d8a35d7a1fb08d&prevstart=0 on the plane? I mean the sign "GOL" on the plane is maked only with some kind of hidden geometry, not with lines on the surface! Till now I have used the Line tool to make these sign, but as I see there is still another way, visible in the hidden geometry mode. And all seems pretier!

If you look closely you will notice he created the text in SU (3d text) then intersected the text with the plane creating the new faces, then deleted the text and painted the faces.
