I found LOD Preferences thread in sys.registry of windows
How can we control it(level of details) for sketchup, using GUI(sketchup interface) or scripting?

I crosspost at gsu's groups too

I'm not 100% sure if this will do what you're wanting, but there is a plugin called "matrix proximity" with which you can control the level of detail of components. Catch is you have to have the components pre-built as it isn't generated automatically.

Thanks Juju for this tip - I have seen it so much and always wondered what it is really about.
