I still think that things ought to be left the way they are. However...there is a much broader church here now than the effective 100% professional users that used the old @Last forum; and it seems obvious that some people just dont "get it". Therefore a sticky explaining the netiquette of not hogging the front page might be useful.
If that fails (and I think we are only talking about a small number of people here...so it wouldn't be too onerous to have a mods discussion on individual cases) then a PM ought to be sent to the people concerned, suggesting they show a little more consideration for other users. If that fails, lock the thread so it sinks naturally.
Putting on my straight face for a moment I would like to second Alan's thoughts on this. It seems a reasonable way to stop the gallery becoming:
a spot where anybody can create their very own endless blog.
A gallery equivelent of the 3D Warehouse.
A place where no self-respecting SU practitioner would bother posting. [and I suspect there are plenty of those already]
What about the whingers who lose the debate on gallery bumping and then bump their own whinge thread. Is that going to bring in the self-respecting SU practitioners?
You lost the poll very convincingly. So nearly a month after this thread was last posted on you carry on your whinge again. I suppose you'll try and claim you're being ironic by bumping. I just think you're being moronic.

Yes john, IRONIC
And Ive only got another 40 ironic pages to go
[big hug and lots of kisses to you too] -

NOW we have a problem
people have been commenting on a thread (Guess which one?) over and over again about how it's off topic, making it more and more off-topic. Doesn't that seem a little hypocritical to anyone?Every 10 minutes there's a new post saying "This thread is way too off topic!" or something on the lines of that, then another saying it's off-topic because everyone say it's off-topic, and it keeps going ON and ON and ON...
Personally, I compare it to a starving animal eating itself. What, not professional enough?MY PERSONAL SOLUTION: A "sort by..." option, as well as a rating ability on usefulness of a thread.

Sorry, mate, but the bulk of that thread's made up of the author's whining about 'rude' votes, wanting to show something but not being able to, etc, etc.

I'd just like to emphasise a couple points here.
One of my main objection to the 45 pager was that it created the precedent for the 'Endless Blog' in the gallery pages.
My..'Everybody's Doin It' ditty was to point out the copycat effect that was happening.
I still think that some reasonable posting guidelines should be pinned in the gallery and that the moderators have a discreet word with people breaching these. And johnsenior, if you seriously think I would bother to start that thread in the gallery to prove a point, then you obviously dont know me or how busy I am.....and mate, I care ....but not THAT much!

Anyways, it might help if there was a way to rate/sort through threads by date, views, a couple others, and rating (letting people rate based on usefulness i.e. a thread about a certain plugin could be good, but some guy complaining on why he doesn't get responses wouldn't)
-
There is no rating system built in phpBB (the forum software we are using) and I would also hate seeing that childish behaviour (rating wars and creating multiple accounts just to rate models) that spoils the usefulness of the rating system in the WareHouse.
-
Yeah... that would be a problem... but is there a way to sort through threads by the amount of posts/views?
-
No more posibilities than just what you see below.
-
No problems. We've managed perfectly well for years without rating or ranking threads on this or the previous @Last forum.
The plain fact is that most of us know which people generally have a valuable contribution to make...and which people are a waste of bandwidth.
I have to admit, that recently I have started putting a few people on my ignore list for the first time in all those years. -
And isn't the 3DW a pretty good example that ratings systems are easily abused anyway? There have been numerous complaints on this forum that constructive criticism has been met with blatant downgrading.
-
i think its OK to a point.
