File conversion .max to .3ds

I own a 3.9Mb .max file from a submarine, I need to integrate in a bigger GSU project.
GSU cann't import .max files, but .3DS with ease.
So I am looking for a possiblity to convert my .max file into a .3ds file.
I know several 3d programs can do the job, but I don't have them nor the intention to buy one for a once-in-5-years job.
Is there anyone who knows of a free converter (for mac) or is someone willing to help me out in another way?Help is much appreciated.
