I've noticed quite a few Forum members use Photoshop, so I am hoping someone could answer a few questions; I am a complete Photoshop virgin 😳 .

I just bought CSE4 Extended, and was wondering how similar to CSE3 it is. The reason I ask is all the stores here still offer manuals/books for CSE3 only.

Also, I understand it's best to use Photoshop with a tablet, and that might be my Christmas present to myself. Can anyone recommend one?

      Thanks.

I havent tried CS4 myself, but the general trend is for most of the features to stay same, they get moved around sometimes, but i dont think they change the main menus very often. So in terms of wether or not to buy a CS3 book, id say yes. The most important thing it will teach you is what each tool does, you can always work around finding the tools themselves.

As for the tablet, youve got a few options.

If you think your likely to be doing a lot of work in PS then youll want to fork out some cash for an intuos 3: http://www.wacom.com/intuos/ They are quite pricey, but worth the money if your doing a lot of work in PS.

If on the other hand you think youll be more of an occasional user, youd probably be better off with a bamboo: http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/bamboo.cfm Its a lot cheaper, but still does the job pretty well, and if the worst comes to the worst and you decide you need an intuos then you havent lost too much.

Thank you both for your input. The Intuos 6x9 and 6x11 look good and aren't too high priced.

Yes, I'd definitely start with something down the bottom end. I got a Bamboo for my laptop, 'cos it was small and light and fitted easily in the case. But it's so darned good...even better than the much more expensive, larger format but older Wacom that I used at my desktop, that I bought another one and use it there too; all the time, for professional illustrations and the like.

The size doesn't matter all that much; you simply zoom in until you are comfortable with the cursor movement onscreen matching the stylus movement on the tablet.

Thanks, Alan. You brought up a good point about using it on my laptop, too, and its portability.
