The City Of Ankh-Morpork W.I.P.

Ash,
what I have done is build each part I'm playing with on a different SU Panel and copying to main model. If we loaded each part to 3dwh then you could go to town on detail, and copy to a plain terrain model with just the street pattern loaded, i will upload the bridge and art tower to 3dwh, but these are just prototype models to see what i need to do to get an idea where this model is going....to do what you are suggesting would probably need a game engine to load parts as you zoom in ....no idea where to even look for that kind of stuffRob
ps some edits to the bridge house fixing some stuff and adding more detail

Hi Folks,
I've been following this thread and glad to see that you are at this collaboration thing where - if needed - I can really help you guys (I know it pretty well since I started to use in about two months ago already).
Anyway, some technical suggestions:
- Robert, under the "Share" tab, you can define whether others than collaborators can see the model at all and if so, they can download or not.
-
- also there you can invite collaborators who already have a 3D WH account.
- this model won't make to the fulfillment this way since it is already 7Mb and the ma size is 10 Mb in the WH so what I'd suggest is to make dummy components (simple footprints maybe) and share the detailed creation of those. Then you can reload the component at home into a big master model, make the screenshots etc. But do not load them into the mater plan in the WH because it will soon become heavier than 10Mb
- make a shared collection instead and you can all upload the individual, detailed pieces there and everyone can try to put the things together on their home computers.
- After a while, you will reach a limit of possible edits of a shared model. Then you ill need to delete some older versions (to which now you can revert your model to) and go on sharing and collaborating.
If you wish,I can move this topic to the "Community Project - Share Models in the 3D WareHouse" and you can keep posting the "results" here (but of course,I don't want to force this move).
Last but not least, if you wish, you can also invite me to the project
At least I could help with the WH sharing function and am also interested in this kind of historic/fantasy stuff (see a work of mine about my city in the 14th century here).I don't promise to be very active all the time (we are in the process of rebuilding the main site of SketchUcation and I also have a job) but I can quickly put some Gothic cathedrals together for you guys
BTW, Robert, what is this "Unregistered version" thing on the screenshot? Doe an expired evaluation version of SU puts that on screen?
-
G'day Gaieus
first off thank you for your suggestions,
the screen shot is a freebie version of Gadwin Screen print.nothing to do with SU at all
I think they shared collection is the way to go , assembly as required by each individual with the parts they want, tho atm only the main model is up there, i should break it down into individual parts and start a collection.
maybe this weekend, I 'll give that a go
and I was thinking the same thing about moving this to where you suggested, please go ahead and do so

OK, I will/would - just I'd also like to hear Jacob's consent; after all he started this topic and I don't want to hijack it or do anything without his word heard.
-
Gai
yup your right of course, my apologizes to Jacob for neatly hijacking his thread, unintentionally
Robert

I see he is also a "collaborator" now.

looks like a cool project! keep it up!

some notes from
"Soul Music" http://www.booklore.co.uk/PastReviews/PratchettTerry/SoulMusic/SoulMusicReview.htm
Misbegot Bridge ( second bridge from the south on Jacobs map) Jetty under the bridge, Lined on both sides with house's making the street rather cramped, bridge is quite high...
Mended Drum (Pub) back door looks right onto the river ankh
Hide Park consists of trees and grass
Street of Cunning Artificers: Street of tiny shops, furnaces glowed in every doorway, Clockmaker's, Armorers, carpenters, 1/3 of the shops made tools for the other shops.
hope this helps with ideas on constructing the city.....
-
And some inspiring images;

-

still huge but will drop from 8mb to 3 with map deleted
am city 4 uploaded to 3dwh, under ankh morpork collection, if you wish to be added to collaborate please pm me your email

My wife will be delighted to see this work. She loves the books.
I'd say the house is great, maybe too well lit and regular? I'd expect medieval lighting to be uneven warm glows (plus a few greenish glares from the more questionable practitioners' stores).
I appreciate the fun you're having with this, having been a Tolkien and Narnia fan myself. But I read one Discworld book and did not get it.
Gook luck

Excellent project - for references for some of the buildings you might want to look at some of the Clarecraft figurines of the buildings.
Hmm, I may have a go at modelling them....
-
Thanks for that Pete, had forgot all about clarecraft,
Pb what book was it you read of the discworld series, terry's humour is a little bit off beat i suppose but I love it, "rincewind" the wizard is bloody brilliant, a survivor if ever there was one. Nanny Ogg, Mistress weatherwax and Magrat the witches are excellent too, as are the nac mac feegle, who think if it is bigger than them , fight it and at 6" tall everything is bigger than them...

I bet that Solo could model some awesome Feegles.....

I read Soul Music. It was fun and diverting.
-
Cool
I just finished it again for about the 5th time "music with rocks in"
Death is awesome in it , joining the Klatchian foreign legion to forget was a hilarious part of the book
and finished "Eric" this week, small but funny 12yr old demonologist and Rincewind go well together....
I have a picture of "Rob Anybody", Big Man of the feegle somewhere need to post it. and I think you are right Solo could do it real justice.
-
Gai, Shift it on over to the other forum!
I'm sorry I haven't been modelling much, I've been very busy, Hopefully I will get some done tommorow.
