The City Of Ankh-Morpork W.I.P.
-
Well, I've got a lot of time on my Hands, and I thought I'd try a bit of a big project. I am going to make a full low detail model of the City of Ankh-Morpork from the Terry Pratchett novels: Discworld.
Now they say that the line between Genius and Insanity is very thin, So I'll show you a picture of the map and let you be the judge of it. I'll upload some pics tommorow or Monday.

You're a madman! I look forward to your posts with interest...

Because I'm so good I've uploaded 2 very quick test renders of the progress so far. Keep in mind that all the buildings are super low detail to start with, and as it goes, I'll add more details.
And in case you ask, It's said that the river is based on the Thames.

Hi Jacob,
This is going to be a fun project I believe (although I already pity your computer).
If I were you,I'd keep this "low detail" variation as a master model, turn each building/block into components, export the components, work on the details in smaller, individual files and at the end re-import them. Maybe onto a separate layer for the detailed ones while keeping the simpler ones on another layer.
Then using scenes you could easily switch between the simple, mass modeling variation and the detailed one.

Good work!! I had once tryed to make the city of Osgiliath, ruined harbor city from the Lord of the Rings. That looks a bit like the map of Ankh-Morpork! (I didnt finsicshed it cause my hard disk chrashed ...) Succes, cause it is so much work, all the buildings!

Hm, I have made old town of Osijek,Tvrdja, and I was doing this for 2 years and every time i see some mistakes, next project was today town Osijek, it is an crazy job, good luck!

That's exactly what I had in mind. And don't worry to much about my Laptop, It's got 2x 3.6 GHz Processors, They shouldn't be too tired at the end of it.
Tomislavm, In total, how many hours would you say You've been working on that City?
-
About 60 hours.

Haha, I actually have that on my wall. Must have been really hard work translating it. Clay renders looking great so far, very organic and nice.

Thanks very much! Might I ask what you mean by Translating it?

The names in the link you provided looks slavic or balcan, while the original is in English.

@ Gaius :Question about component
A file "big city" is saved with a component named "little house"
Open a new file, and modify the component "little house", and saved the component "little house" as component
When I reload the file "big city", the component "little house" is not actualized inside!
Is that normal?Pilou, the way it works is to right click on the component either in the browser or in the model and from there choose "reload". Then an "Open" window opens where you can navigate to the modified file.
Be careful to always keep the original world origin however because that's the insertion point.

Ah Yes... You see the reason they're not in English is that it's the only map of that type(and resolution) I could find on the web. So in the case of no map, or slavic/balcan map, I'll take the slavic/balcan map.
As for progress, None. I might work on it later tonight.

It's Czech I believe.

Fantastic Work! I will subscribe to this thread (I am reading now a book of Terry Prattchet, the spanish name is "Rechicero"). It's a pity, I don't have enough level of english to read it in english, I know that I lose some of the jokes

Sure, that as well. Mine was the "native" solution.

G'Day Jacob
I have always wanted to try and do this since i found SU, seeing your model and now i have a wee bit more experience with SU i,m gonna give it a go too. don't know about low poly tho as each part is individualand very few of the buildings are the same gonna be huge.....as you will see it's my third attempt.... using normal SU tools with the sandbox being the main one used...
I have ordered the Terry Pratchet books "streets of ankh morpork" and "Mapp of Ankh Morpork", any interesting photos or drawings i can get from them i am more than willing to share with you if you need further references to the city
have attached a jpeg of my start on it, Model is 2,346' on a side

edges 31649
faces 11832

That's looking pretty good so far Robert! It would be great if you could scan some images from those books, I've PM'd my email to you.
Might I ask why there are so many lines on the East side of the city wall?
And Sorry I haven't been able to get any more pics of the project, I've been doing a lot of traveling, and haven't set up my SketchUp PC yet.
