Ikea type furniture
-
My wife got fed up with waiting for me to redo our living room and dragged me kicking and screaming (she did the kicking, I did the screaming )to the Ikea depot. We bought a sofa, two couches and a pine shelf unit in a white finish.
But when we looked for a coffee table and a unit for the TV and a couple of side units we couldn't find anything that went with the shelf unit. Seeing as we'd chucked out the old ones, I had no choice but to get down to designing and building these myself. I had to design them so that they looked as though they'd come straight out of the Ikea catalogue.
You can get 18 and 28 m"m sheets made of pine that are 250c"m by 80c"m and I designed all the pieces so that I could build them from those sheets much in the same way as you'd use plywood sheets. The only parts not made of these pine sheets are the legs which are 4cm by 4cm pine cut from a single 4.5cm thick plank of pine 3.4 meters long and 19c"m wide.
I used a bisquite joiner for all the joinery.
I'd very much like to have you comments. This is the coffee table:
This is the unit for the TV:
Small cabinate and side table:
Side table for books:
I'll post the models in the Components sub-forum.

Dude, your tv stand is exactly what I have been looking for. We bought a new tv recently and I had to get rid of our old ent. ctr as the hole was too small.
Nice work. Now which page of the catalog are they on?
-
Eric, asking me which page of the IKEA catalogue they're on is the best compliment you could have given me!
BTW, I thought I'd try to get in touch with IKEA to try and interest them in my designs but I just keep getting an internet run-around. It's almost as though they're not interested in talking to anyone. Strange. You'd think they'd welcome new ideas.
Anyway, I'm glad you like the pieces. -
Very nice work, sir. I also like your designs. I was going to show my woodworking project from the weekend but I guess I won't now. It would just be in the dark shadows behind the gleam of your work.

"Gleam"???
But I used a matt finish
Hmmmm...
Anyway, I'd love to see your work.
Please post your stuff. -
Yours is blindingly brilliant compared to my weekend project. All I did was make a sort of backboard to stand up on my cheap flat pack computer desk so I could mount my new giant monitor on it. Nothing special. When I get a chance to build something good, I'll post pictures. in the meantime I'll show you a couple of my past projects. You might have seen them already though.
The steering wheel I made for the sailboat, above.

Dave, I am sure you had the most fun creating that first one. And I am not talking about the cradle
Nice stuff. Cool.

Maybe but the others took much longer.
Thank you.
Gidon, I didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Cool stuff, Dave, and beautifully made.
I thought I'd attach a skippy illustrating the construction method I used for all these pieces. So here it is:

Thank you Gidon.
That's a very good illustration. It looks like your construction methods make for fast work. Good on you.
