could indeed be something interesting, Mike.

but I will try the use of the cryengine2 game enginefor real time presentation of large models first (probably only because I can shoot my houses to pieces 😉 )

I had a look at that thread and it looks very interesting.
What I think is needed is a good tutorial showing the process.
Hopefully someone will come up with one 👍

Thanks Mike I'm also on the lookout for a way to display sketchup models live on the web.

The demo reel looks mightily impressive.

I agree with you Alan BUT the company has NOT a clue about
how to run a business. I made an enquiry some time ago and
have not even received an acknowledgment let alone information!

However mate they don't seem to be doing to badly!

I think it was this company who did a interactive city model as one of their first for our local council. Funny thing is that as they have no stand alone reader or viewer no models can be tested in scene during development of the design which to me is quite a downfall toward the use by councils.

I really feel for councils or assessment bodies to get the most from planning models a format that encourages designers and developers to engage with it is far more useful. In our situaton you have to supply a mass model and coloured elevations to the council for it to be finalised (by a local rep of sim) and they then place it in council's model. If your model is not satisfactory for use (don't think to date I've actually heard of one being so) their local rep can provide a modelling service to the client to produce the "correct" model!! Oh and of course rendering services, marketing material etc etc!!! BTW for some reason skippy format has not been accepted.

I've been wanting for some time to suggest our council output this town model and make it available on Google Earth so that available for public use (what it should have been in the first place). I hope they agree and this can be negotiated with sims as the alternative is to request our dept of fair trading to consider whether this practice is one of following fair trading policy.

Sad to hear that your local council is not skp friendly. I work with 3 local authorities - all of them accept skp files, I think they might even prefer them.

I'm against the move for city commissions to require proprietary software for submittals, especially if it requires a "service" or the SW is not free. I understand this for larger cities, state school programs etc., but being "different" (Mac-user), it goes against my sense of fair play and free market. Anyway, some of these smaller cities get the idea to require AutoCAD files etc. and they are not really able to utilize the files.

On the other hand, the more they require, the more work for us, hopefully billable.

Well put and exactly my point. In the interest of fair play I think any city model should be so devised that a model for import can can be made in a bunch of universal formats and then converted easily for import. I also feel strongly that any town or city model should be available in a format useable by the public / designer to determine and test structures to the same level they will be assessed in this environment!!
