Flower beds. . .how to do 'em
-
I posted this on the Podium forum as well. .. but I am expanding my fishing net a bit. . .
I have a request. . ..can someone help me with a technique that can create a good looking 2d or 3D flower bed. I have tried Billboard components that always face model etc etc
used the component spray tool. but upon rendering the results are . . .shall we say. .. underwhelming. Any Ideas. I want something that looks like the last 3 pix but so far my experiments so far . . .not so great.Something with manageable poly count, a good "randomness" to the texture . .etc etc. well you guys know how to do this stuff. . . .
Thanx in advance.
p.s. I realize that some PP in PhoShop would be necessary . ..that's ok.

Have you tried making the entire bed a clipmap?

David,
I posted this http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=8446&start=15 in another thread you replied in regarding rocks, attached is a zip file with two images. One image is the texture/image and the other is the clipmap/alpha of the above thread rock garden render, I hope this helps.
The original image is pure 3d model and once rendered I extracted the alpha channel to create a clipmap.
I am compiling a whole series of clipmaps for Podium 2 (they will be in .png format as the new engine will recognize .png) and they will include flower beds, trash, debris, trees, shrubs, etc (everyday stuff) Unfortunately it will be about three months before I and P2 will be done.

Pete: cool!
David, here's another thought: I was actually working on this idea a few months ago, but didn't get a chance to use it (and couldn't find my work today :~) so did another quicky. The idea was to build the bed up with a mini terrain using different materials to give it some interest (I wouldn't suggest the big triangles shown here...just a quicky). Then slap bunches of growies on it. That done, and made into a component, you could rotate them for beds on the other side of the walk...this work in podium?

yeah. . .Tom. .this is great. This is what I am talkin' about! I guess a combo of 2D and 3D imagery is the best way to do this
Check out my thread here. . ..

anyway. . .this is great. I have to do this for several large beds, so I hope it doesnt become too poly heavy . . .but this renders up nicely. and of course, Solo . . your stuff always amazes. ..

David,
I have posted some more clips and a layout of how to use clips from higher angles (rough example) here: http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/post/supodiumforum/vpost?id=2575819&pid=27707910#post27707910
Here is a basic layout and result using the clips I made today.

way cool solo!!!
I have often thougth about purchasing Podium but up til now I have had my head down and ---- up!!!
I will however download the demo and give it a run, thanks for possibliy converting me.

Andrew, you wouldnt regret buying Podium.
I dithered for a while but I use it all the time now.
Even on a smalish job I can punch out half a dozen 20 minute renders, with reflections.
Its got a few little quirks, but nothing too serious and a there's a new version in the pipline which is sounding pretty good. -
