This is a question for the folks that use Sketchup for doing working drawings for building houses.

What techniques do you employ for doing the electrical part of the plans? You know, the plan views that show with symbols where all the lights, receptacles, switches, etc., are placed?

I am not aware of many people who do use SU for drawing 2d plans. It is not designed to do this.
People do create 3d models and use a plan view/section to create plans but it is far easier to use a 2d drawing package such as AutoCad/Turbocad etc, etc.

Me personally, I would probably export the drawn plan to Photshop or Illustrator and add the symbols in their, if I did not have a 2d drawing package.

If you do not have Autocad or an equivalent, you may be interested in this thread

Gene - Dylan is correct that doing full construction drawings in SketchUp is not common. Most of us haven't attempted it. That isn't to say you can't -- whatever turns your crank. πŸ˜„

If you wanted to do your electrical plan in SketchUp you could create the various symbols as components that you could place on your plan as required. If you are a SketchUp Pro user you could alternately add your symbols and annotations using the LayOut program that comes with SketchUp Pro. In it you could more easily produce a SketchUp based set of construction drawings -- more easily than just using SketchUp.

          Regards, Ross
