when trying to complete a roof it will not let me connect the lines to create a single surface on a slightly angled plane without inserting diagonal lines in between two edges of the surface any suggestions?

It sounds like your lines arent co-planar, i.e. theyre not on the same plane.

Its quite hard to be specific, but generally the easiest way to keep your lines co-planar is to make liberal use of the inference system and construction lines.

Try using the Protractor Tool to create guidlines either side to create the roof pitch, then connect all your lines.
If you post your model we can tell you exactly which line is incorrect and guide further, but as Remus explained, the reason is down to the lines not being coplaner.

Sometimes you just simply cannot draw coplanar roof faces on certain buildings if they are not rectangular (or your roof ptch won't be at the same height). So also have a look at the plan of the building.
