      What's up bros???
i'm having a problem importing 3DS files into sketchup. thing is that they come exploded in a way that looks like a puzzle!!! these 3DS files are exported from 3Ds Max 9 32-bit, if this has anything to do...
sorry about the any mistakes in my english... i'm from brazil and it's been long since my last visit to the US.. 💚
      thanks!

Theres a script that is very useful for this, but for the life of me i cant remeber the name of it. Basically what it does is get rid of any lines that arent needed (lines splitting faces, for example.)

Once youve run this script (if someone can find it, i tihnk its called sometihng like 'clean up') you should thne only have to soften/smooth any edges left that you dont need. Probably quite tedious if your model is pretty big, altohugh i dont know any other way of doing it.

I don't think that triangulation and such is the problem here, Remus. Most files import just fine from Max, but some...for whatever reason, do indeed come into SU broken into pieces. For instance a car might import with the body in one place and the wheels several metres away and rotated by 90 degrees.

I've never figured it out, because it's never happened with a model I created, just ones I have found on the Net. I assume it has something to do with the way in which Max is registering the origin of various sub-components. Such files very often look broken in other applications too, such as Deep Exploration, which would seem to suggest that it's a problem with the file itself rather than a problem of the SU importer.

You can try breaking the model down to basic geometry before export to 3ds and see if that helps.

You might want to check the scale of your model.
As an experiment, try to export it 10 times bigger and also a version which is 10 times smaller.
Try to import them in SU and see if it gets better.
Changing scale solved things for me in the past...

thanks guys, i've never worked in 3DS, only to export models that i got on the net, so i really don't know how to scale for exemple, but this is a sketchup forum so i will try it myself. if anyone has more information about the broken pieces and some way to solve this, i'd aprecciate. 💚
