Lewis, I should be registered well before then at the Avante. Ross McIntosh may be in by then too. Check with the front desk, leave a message if need be with your room#.
I'll try "linger in the lobby" around 6:00.
Regards, John Clements
I hope to see you both then.

In case anyone checks this before they meet, I am planning on joining up with everyone. I think I will get to the hotel in time to check in and get ready for dinner. My wife and kids are driving me down, so they will give me a ride to the hotel. I might even have room for 1 (small person squished between 2 car seats) in the car if there are any stragglers out there looking for a ride. At any rate, I'll be at the hotel or at chilis. See you then!

i forgot, when and where is base camp? i live near by (ie: in CA) so i can just drive up and meet you guys there. it should be fun.
*edit: stoops! i just read the basecamp site and turns out that
A) you need an invitation and sign ups closed
B) you need to be 18 or older, so that imediatly disqualifys me. so sad... -
The diner at Chillis was very good. It's great to finally meet the people I've communicated with on the forums for so long. The show and tell with Justin was very cool.
-
There was also Brian Woodward at Chillis.
As to Csaba, it really isn't like jabba the Hut.
The "a" is pronounced closer to the "o" in "on". CHOBBA. With the accent on the first syllable.
or better yet like "au" in aurelian. CHAUBBA -
Well, mission accomplished - we met up. We had 18 people at the Avante (Thanks to the Avante for their complimentary happy hour!) and 17 people at Chili's.
With large groups, many times the seating and service can suck. However, I have to tell you that for the size group we were, we got seated relatively fast, and the service was EXCELLENT. Food was great too. I am a man of my word, and I bought the first round. Glad I was able to do it.
Several people had their cameras out and Mike had his video camera going. Mine was in my fanny pack, packed away, waiting...
If I can remember who was there:
Myself (Todd Burch)
John Clements
Mike Lucey
Susan Sorger
Brian Lockhart
Aidan Chopra
Tyler Miller
Coen Nannick
John Bacus
Ross MacIntosh
Lewis Wadsworth
Czaba (aka Gaieus)
Phil Rader
Justin Chin
Chris Fulmer
Brian Woodward
(oh man... I'm forgetting some names... they were at the other end of the table, on the same side I was... post your name here please!! Sorry!!)After dinner, most went back to their hotels but a few us weren't done. We met up with Rick Wilson and went to the Pool hall across the street from the Avante and grouped (pun intended) a couple tables. Here's a shot of the remaining few:
Top row, left to right
Phil Raider
John Clements
Ross MacIntosh
Czaba (pronounced like "Jabba" - as in Jabba the Hut from Star Wars, but with a "ch" instead of the "j")
Mike LuceyBottom row, left to right:
Rick Wilson
Todd Burch
Justin Chin (aka, Monsterzero - he looks like his avatar!)The discussion was excellent. Justin was gracious enough to open his Macbook Pro and show some of his artwork and tell us how he models. He's a genius. Rick and my minds were racing, thinking of all the ruby script opportunities there are, and the others were just as enthralled as we were.
I think all of us walked away with new ideas about how to use and leverage SketchUp. Awesome. Thanks everybody for joining in the fun - for the whole evening!

Oops!! Thanks Susan. (Added Brian W.)

Todd,
Thanks for sharing this. -
lazy google, not even a text line from basecamp at http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/
we expected too much for a video life coverage of the event.thanks to SCF members that post more info
-
It's way too secret for that Tavi.
I believe visitors of Basecamp have to sign a NDA ( is that the right word?), just like beta testers...It would indeed be fun to get live coverage...in some form.
-
NDA for what ? didnt saw anything in agenda that is that strictly confidential
best coverage until now I found at http://aecnews.com/ (3 posts from the trenches )
-
If they were going to talk aobut anything new and exciting it probably wouldnt be the best idea to publicise it in the agenda...
-
anything new and exciting will not be hold by an NDA. and they know that
they said that will have some coverage about the event. hope it will not be 3 months after (even if that is better than nothing)
-
Isn't Basecamp just some excuse to have some parties?
-
I am lucky enough to live in the bay area and be able to crash the dinner get-together. I'm wasn't lucky enough to get into Basecamp though
Showing the guys my stuff was a bit more intense then I expected, heh. It was like I was at a high pressure job interview with Mike Lucy throwing out "You got the job!" or "You lost the job!" every now and then. I believe my job approval rating tipped over the 50% mark somehow. Todd is too kind with his assertion of any genius regarding my efforts. I find more genius here than in my own personal efforts. I do this for fun, I don't get paid to use SketchUp (yet). Just glad to feel welcomed at the dinner. Lot's of brain power there and it was really fun to join in however small.
Any news on a Thursday dinner? I might like to join that as well, I didn't get to meet everyone.
-
More news: they want us to design a portable sports facility sponsored by some rappers in a favela...this is the 3DBC design competition, just announced, and it's been made to sound morally obligatory.
-
I didn't make the Tuesday dinner, but did get to see Todd's excellent presentation of Ruby scripts today (Wednesday). In a short amount of time he covered a very broad number of scripts and did demos of quite a few given the time... Thanks Todd.
And yes, it was a good excuse for a party as the band played, the beer and wine flowed... I'm sure it was only a warm-up period for many people who this evening are glad there is no live coverage of the after-party.
I heard no announcements beyond the contest Lewis mentioned. Details are to be posted Friday.
And for a good laugh, if you do a Google Search on "SketchUp BaseCamp" you will find this advertisement from someone willing to sell "the advanced Sketchup knowledge that I will learn" at BaseCamp! http://orlando.craigslist.org/egr/696480489.html

I was told that Igloo studios did a presentation involving the use of the new Web Exporter and used FF as an example. I actually tweaked the code to this to get in closer to a model, or actually inside one. At this stage it is a very rough edit (just shortened the standoff radius), as we wanted a few quick examples on the FormFonts front page...they display at random, use Refresh to change.
http://www.formfonts.com/If you REALLY shorten the radius, you can get inside a model.
http://www.formfonts.com/images/front_page_pics/2/thumbspin/Marina/index.htmlWe are working on ways to make the script more adaptable in a number of ways...hopefully including having the model spin by default on opening, until you decide to interact with it.
