I'll be there with some of the FormFonts team. I spent quite some time in Boston many moons ago...you could try some of the smaller hotels and B&Bs in Cambridge over the river. Transport links are good via The 'T'. The rates may still be quite reasonable, as it's nearly a month before the peak graduation time at Harvard and MIT....when they tend to go up.

Please come around and visit me. I'll be at the Piranesi booth.

I managed to get rooms at the Holiday Inn Somerville through the AIA at a reasonable price. It is right on the subway line.

It was odd, on the list of available hotels it indicated that it was completely booked, but when I wanted to register and book a hotel there was a completely differetn list and it was avaialble as were others that had appeared booke. You might try and go through the booking process to see if there are actually more available than they say there are.

I would agree with Susan that you should look at hotels in Cambridge, Somerville, or Brookline. And there are several new hotels in the Industrial District in Boston, on Mass. Ave. (the Roundhouse and a snazzy-looking Hampton Inn) which are probably off the usual lists...I haven't checked, though.

I'd really love to meet Susan and Alan in the flesh (and I'm an AIA member, right?) but I think I will probably avoid the convention though I could walk to the venue from my house: this last year my general opinion of the value of my erstwhile profession has simply nosed-dived....time to find something else to do with my life, I suppose.

Thanks a lot for the info,I will give those places a try.

Alan, I was a subscriber to FF when it came out, so I will definetely check out the booth out. Susan, you may not remember me, I met you at the LA Convention some years ago at the Entourage Arts booth. I'll stop by again.
            Lewis,

I hear you. As a sole practicioner, its only becoming harder to let my passion for Architecture drive me to keep the business growing.
As an aside, when the Convention came to San Diego, I was so busy I missed it completely, even thou it was held 5 minutes from ny office.

I thought a lot about wheter to go to Boston or not, then I decided to do it. Pay the fee and booked the flight. Two days later, through this forum I hear about Base Camp 2008, submitted an application and yes you guess it, was invited. Now my continuing education budget has exploded. No way I am not going.

            Thanks again,

            Khintanar

I will be going to Basecamp, of course (yep, got a gold ticket). But my interest in SketchUp and Google is slightly independent of my interest in architecture.

Oh, who knows, maybe I will stop by the AIA thing anyway. I have a pile of literature from the local AIA on it.

I'm not so good with names. Better with faces, but marginally so. Look forward to seeing and meeting friends old and new. C'mon Lewis, maybe you will find a new path at the AIA?

I'll be there with a bunch of SketchUp friends at the Google booth ...showing off SketchUp, of course! ๐Ÿ˜„

We'll be giving SketchUp demo presentations throughout the day on the big screen.

Stop by and say hi! ๐Ÿ˜„

                  Cheers,

Just wanted to say that it was great to finally meet you all in person! Thanks for coming over to the booth and spending some time chatting!

It was an awesome show and I had a lot of fun demoing SketchUp. My favorite "walk up" was the person who watches me quickly build a house and then they say, "ok, I get it...SketchUp is just a quick mock-up toy to proof ideas before you begin building it in (insert your lame CAD software of choice here)".. That's when I'd open a fully featured commercial building model with full interiors, 50 scenes showing floor plans, dimensions, ground plots, elevator shaft mechanicals, etc... and watch their jaw drop! he he he ...yeah, just because it's easy to use, doesn't mean it's a toy! ๐Ÿ˜„

Again, thanks to everyone who showed up to say hi! It was really great to meet you all!!

                    Cheers,

It was good to finally meet you in "non-digital" form, too, Craig. And Susan, as well, and Alfredo "khintanar." I'm sorry that I didn't manage to meet Alan.

I hope to see you all again in a few weeks in Mountain View.

Really good convention - loved Boston; as usual, always great things new and old within a few blocks and the special treat of meeting some of my cyberspace friends. Sorry I didn't get to meet Lewis and Khintanar. It was a hard decision to stay inside for the seminars and show with all to see in the city. Almost glad that it was cold and rainy!

I would like to write more but still playing catchup from taking all last week off. We drove to Boston by way of Fallingwater - quite an experience -- both the drive and the house.

I have attached a few photos taken with Alan and son, Susan, CraigD and David from Podium.

                        I'll write more later.

Again - great to meet all of you.

                        Jim

David from Podium and a couple of shots of the convention center.

If anyone is interested I could get together some Boston and Fallingwater photos. We also had an in depth tour of Fenway Park - very interesting to baseball fans.

Same here. Great Convention, made more so by the city and all there is to see.

I had a great time touring Kahn Buildings at Yale, the Gerhy fiasco at MIT, some Harvard Museums and historic Boston. I also had a non-architectural tour of the ICA Building. I am still not sure what to think of it, great exterior public places and magnificent views from inside (specially the media room) but the galleries were so small and bland?.

A personal highlight was visiting the JFK Library and archives, more for the history than the building, athough I liked the Atrium space a lot. And of course, meeting Craig D., Lewis and Susan.

                            Now back to work...

                            Alfredo
