We've been waiting for this one for a while. It's been said (by beta testers) that SP3 speeds up XP(amongst other things), I have to add though that a lot of rumours have made their rounds.

[link removed due to people having trouble with the update]

Thanks for the notice. I'm surprised they are still tinkering with XP, rather than fixing Vista.

Don't be surprised, it's not everyday that the general public would rather have the older version of a product than the newer one. Vista was voted one of the top 10 worst technologies for the last 20 years I think it was.

If I want the "Vista experience" I'll load the theme pack and rip out all but 256MB worth of RAM from my machine. Then you have to contend with high incidents of incompatibility, even with products that are supposed to be Vista qualified.

No thanks, I'll stick with XP as long as I don't need to "upgrade" to Vista for the some or other (life threatening) reason.

You can download it directly from the Microsoft website - XP SP3.

Are you sure that is not a RC? I was in a impression that XP SP3 was released to TechNet subscribers, others will get it at 4/29 via Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center.

The word is that it has gone gold, I have not downloaded it yet, getting someone else to do it for me seeing that my bandwidth is just about gone for the month. I got the link from a reliable source, so I don't reckon it is a RC (release candidate) version the link points.

We were able to recreate the files from archives in about three hours...it was very stressful, and unnecessarily so...people screaming and so forth. (I blame the pointlessly compulsive profession of architecture for the screaming bit, not Microsoft...it's not like it really matters whether the drawings go out at 6 PM or 9 PM. The printers are not going to get to them until the next morning anyway, and it turned out some of the consultants were running behind as well...On the other hand, why did Vista pick right then to eat the files?)

Depending on your version of Linux and WINE, you may get SU to work partially on Linux. If you're lucky enough for the program to start, the usual issue is problems with invisible toolbars or similar GUI features. And occasional program instability (crash on export 2D, etc.). In theory, if you custom compile your own version of WINE with the correct options, most of these can be overcome, but I find that inevitably I get something wrong when assembling all the dependencies.

Depending on the capricious favor of the Gods of WINE and Chaos, you may be as lucky as this guy:
                            http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=6842&iTestingId=21862

The Google people once told me that the free version of SketchUp is more likely to run under WINE than the Pro version because of the .NET requirements for the latter.

                                  Thomaz and others,

I downloaded SP3 from the link provided and like Thomaz encountered the BSD and error notice. Unlike Thomas, I wasn't able to see the note and my laptop get trying to reboot for hours on end until I shut it off so I lost not an hour but Saturday evening and all Sunday.

I was told to call MS Tech Support and request the pay service but since it would be a MS issue, there would be no charge. I think the pay service gets you through quicker though.

Unlike Thomas I'm not able to access anything and I have to wait to get to the office where my original copy of MS XP installation disks are stored.

This is not the way to spend a rainy weekend I can tell you,

                                  Allen

I think I'll have to remove the link (from my first post in this thread) seeing that people are having trouble with the update.

Let me add to the tale of woe,

I thought I did yesterday but its gone missing on me on this page.

I installed SP3 Saturday afternoon and have not been able to boot my computer since. I've been on the phone with Microsoft yesterday and for more than three hours today. Bottom line is my computer is fried and all attempts by MS to restore it have failed. Their suggestion is for me to install a parallel copy of Windows XP on my hard drive, copy the data files over to the new partition and then delete the fried partition and reinstall all my software. Ugh.

A computer tech that we buy our computers from said he wanted a crack at restoring it I've agreed to send it to his shop tomorrow.

What I've learned is that SP3 was not supposed to be released to the general public until tomorrow the earlies and the version I downloaded Saturday was for developers only (didn't say so on the MS Download Center site). Apparently with my particular hardware/software configuration, it corrupted the registry and other boot sector files and all attempts to uninstall SP3 (which didn't seem to leave itself in my directory) failed, attempts to restore to a previous version of a working bootable system failed. Basically everything MS could think of failed.

Bottom line, until they've figured it out, stay away from this release.

                                        Allen

The first thing to do is turn off the automatic updates...this at least gives you some control over your software destiny.
