How do I eliminate this banded effect in a tileable texture?
-
I would like to do it using free software, like gimp (if possible). I have searched in Google for a solution, but I had no luck.
This is the effect:
I am not good with gimp or similar software, but I have to make a good stone texture and I know that is very important for the finished model.
Thanks.

I have made a first attempt. In fact I was looking for a way of doing it with a script or something similar, but I see I have to do it manually. Anyway thanks Alan.
I have to go out for three days, so I won't be able to respond you untill thursday. If you have another way to fix the problem, let me know

It looks like one corner of the original image is a little darker than the rest of it. You will need to use a Dodge tool (I don't know what it is called in Gimp, but it is usually Dodge in every other image editor.) If it has a soft brush setting, use that until you lighten the corner enough, so that it does not form those dark bands when repeated. You may need to try it a few times and then re-tile the image until it looks OK.

You could try any of the following apps:
-
Seamless Texture Generator Pro: automates the process of getting lighting levels correct on the texture to be generated, can also tweak the levels yourself.
-
Genetica: I have not used it myself, however I understand it is quite good.

I used only Gimp, as I like to use opensource/ free software. This is a better version, using the dodge tool. There are some glitches yet, but I am happy with this at the moment.

This tutorial shows a technique that may help eliminating shading.
