Cropping, no obvious answers in the instructions
-
I'm trying to utilize a cropping tool to help my fellow workers understand how to and why to crop a 3d medical image. What I want to do is show a 3d model of a house, front on from street level, then crop away the front wall to show the living room, crop away the living room and secondary wall to show the kitchen/bedroom, and finally to crop away the next wall and see the den, possibly the back yard. I've been working on this for a couple of weeks now and getting frustrated with a lack of knowledge of the tools available. Any help/advice would be sincerely appreciated.

In SU this feature is called a "section cut" and is made by a "section plane"...lots of info on how to do such in help (kind of like looking up how to spell a word in the dictionary when you don't know how to spell the word, huh? :`)
If more help needed, don't hesitate to ask.
Best, Tom. -
Here is what the SU Guide says about section cuts and planes: http://download.sketchup.com/sketchuphelp/gsu6_win/Content/I-Construction_Tools/ConTool-SectionPlane.htm and here is a tutorial on animated section cuts: http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=633

If section planes don't do it for you, you can always fall back on layers. The only reason for layers in SU is to control visibility...not to separate geometry...so that is pretty much what you want.
You need to draw everything on Layer0 then move it to other layers you create...preferably after grouping it first. The only reason I haven't grouped stuff in my example file is that the house is only 1 skin thick so you'd see the edge of the groups all over the outside walls...very messy.
You can see in the example that you can reveal whatever you like by hiding the appropriate layers. Different requirements would obviously call for a different layer structure.
