Bruce,
I'm sorted now. For other peoples benifit what was I doing wrong?

Two things

1. I obviously didnt type in the full details which are.
http://My web page details.com/sketchup

2 I have two toolsbars now. Google and Yahoo.
When I typed in the correct details in the Yahoo search and
pressed enter, it didnt find anything.
When I repeated the exercise with Google it worked and I found
the root directory.

What I would like to do now please is have 5 minutes to make a brew.
I would then like to repeat the whole exercise again, make my own notes, so I can repeat the exercise unaided.

Thanking you.

speak soon

Alan.

Hi Bruce,
You said
*Alan...I am a bit confused as to why you would use a "search" text box.

Your browser has an "Address" text box...that is where you put the url...you don't need to search for it you have it.*

Thats what happens when you're a complete beginner at this. I think it great that I'm making these mistakes, learning from it, and other beginners will benifit.

Thanking you.

Alan.
PS back to repeat the process and make notes.

mistakes are how I learned most of what I know about websites...

look at my website name... if you read my post about choosing a domain, you saw that I suggest the " - " inbetween words so that google will see the word seperation... but in my aboveallhouseplans.com name... you can see... mistakage, and I've had the domain too long to change it...

that's how you leanr...

if I had it to do over again,

I would make it above-all-house-plans.com

Well another lesson learnt.
I said that I wanted to make my own notes. No need to do that.

When you visit the link provided by Bruce to his lesson I did this
1 I opened up a word document.
2 I copied all of the lesson
3 Pasted it into my word document
named it web page building by Bruce and I dont have to make my own notes. Now I know this is damn obvious to some who have been doing this for years but not, to the beginner.

Thanking you Bruce.

Alan

Excellent tutorial Bruce, worked seamlessly!
It's nice to have some webspace to upload to and a very easy method of doing it.

Looking forward to the next step.

After lesson 1, the test.

Submit a model or document. I choose a model.
The sketchup image is of a jewellers saw that I use when removing the waste between the pins of dovetails when I make them by hand.

I hope this works.

If it does its thanks to Bruce, and thanks to Coen for this great facility.

fingers crossed.

Bruce.
And another shot.
This was made to commission from English oak with cedar of Lebanon drawer bottoms. The latter timber has a lovely fragrance. I did have some say in the design and most of it I am pretty happly with.

Unfortunately the lady wanted the drawer fronts like this and not recessed like the door panels. Combined with the wooden knobs to me it looks completely incongruous and ruins the piece. Having said that she was over the moon with it, so in here eyes a complete success.

Hi Bruce,

Have I passed? πŸ˜‰

With regards to the front page. I know your joking, but I've been looking around at other web sites and have a few designs in mind.

Until I'm completely happy with it, and of course maybe a better domain name, I won't be rushing into that.

Have you any day/time in mind for lesson 2?

And a big cheer to you.

Thanking you.

I think Bruce means just a placeholder page... something to start off on...

like this file upload this to your main website directory

open the zip file first then upload the contents... the index.htm file

yes I forgot to mention that modelhead...

be sure to check with yahoo or your respective host on what home page name to use...

Yahoo was one of the first, they owned companies like geocities... and they pioneered some of those names... like I believe "default" "homepage" and "index.htm" are all viable still... but check with your host...

index.htm is just the most prevalent for basic site function

Alan that's a beautiful piece...

I might add to all of you that if you enjoy things like Alan's piece you can watch a video series call the "Antiques Road Show" on youtube and the like... it has people coming into a show and professionals tell them what their antique is worth...

if I had to judge Alan's piece I would say...

"the chest is from the early 19th century, and it is in remarkable condition, obviously made by a true craftsman, with years of skill... it most likely comes from the new England states... and has an estimated value of $350,000.00"

I love that show...

so as you can see Alan, while my appraisal talents are certainly in question, I think you have a wonderful hand in working wood...

Hi Kris,

Re the Antiques Road Show. That is shown over here on one of the BBC programmes I think and I love it.

Thanks for the comments. If only it was worth that much!

My wife and I formed a project we called The furniture for youth development projectand this was the second piece I made where the funding went to youth groups we wished to support.

I took my skills to a different level with this job. Its amazing what you can achieve when you are not hindered by deadlines. Other aspects were a complete failure. If I worked out how much per hour I was getting it was embarassing, but then again I was skilling up so maybe I'm being a bit too critical.

Oh, and thanks for chipping in on this thread.

Alan
