i am having the following problem: some of the files i download get to my computer as .mov files. the funny thing is that they keep their original extensions (.rb, .style ou .skp); what shows that they are been read as something else is their icon, very clearly quicktime's. if i try to double-click on them quicktime opens and tells me "this is not a quicktime file". sometimes there is a workaround but not always.

any ideas as to how to solve the problem?

Not quite sure if I am understanding the problem.

Are you saying that when you download a file from the internet, that it shows up with the proper extension but opens in Quicktime? If that is the case, right click on the file, choose 'get info' and you will find a dialogue about half way down the window that allows you to choose the software you want to use to open the file.

If I am misunderstanding you and you are saying that downloaded files are showing up with the .mov extension even when they are not a movie file, then you can just erase the .mov and replace with the proper extension. You will get a window that asks if you are sure you want to change the extension, just confirm your change and you should be good to go.

As for why this is happening, I really don't know. Sometimes, my downloaded files will show up with a .php extension for some unknown reason.

I hope this helps a bit.

          Cheers, Chuck

yes, you got it right. your solution works fine with the ruby script, as I can assign text edit as the app that should open it. but what about the style files, which are Unix Executable files? what software should i assign them to? SU, test edit or what?

by the way, the files with problem are described in get info as >> kind: mpeg-1 file.

            thanks, chuck.

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but why would you need to "open" a styles file? Don't you just place them in the SketchUp styles folder and SketchUp takes it from there? I think, too, that I read something on this forum earlier that the style file was really a type of zip file and that you could change it to a zip, unstuff it, and then you can access the files in it.

Not sure if that is the case, or not.

              Cheers, Chuck

right click the offending file, get info. Scroll down to "open with, select the preferred application, and click "change all". This should fix your problem

                  chuck,

not a silly question at all. i do not want to open the .style files. i just thought SU might have difficulties in recognizing it because of the association with QT. but i see it does not.

                  santiago,

i did what you suggested for the .rb files. let us see if it works for future downloads as well.

                  thanks.

                    At least it works, great!

As to why it calls itself an mpeg 1 for default, I have no idea. That is weird; it's almost like we are talking about the peculiarities of a computer 💚

                    Have a good monday!
