OK folks, my USB wireless optical mouse has been misbehaving. It'll work fine, and then it'll start not responding. Can't move it, can't click anything. Also, sometimes, when the mouse is sitting still, the cursor will start moving upward on the screen. Checked the battery, checked the usb plug.

I've looked in Properties and it says it's working properly.

so I went out and bought a different brand of wireless optical, and it's doing the exact same thing. What the heck's wrong?

        Hi Joe.

Could it be that you have some malware running on your machine? I had a BHO (Browser Helper Object - sort of like a plug-in) that installed itself into Internet Explorer not too long ago, and it caused me all kinds of grief.

Does your computer click (as if you clicked the mouse), or do active windows you are viewing all of a sudden lose focus with you doing nothing? If so, this might be the issue.

        Todd

in days of old, roller ball mice got gunk build up on the ball, restricting movement...

today the laser is the ball... check the lens, for dust and for things like pet hair or people hairs coiled up inside the laser hole... look very closely... use a pair of tweezers to pluck the hairs out. or use a Q-Tip and alcohol to clean the lens

and watch your eyeballs... lasers are not for them

            Joe,
Have you recently upgraded monitor or other devices(new chordless phone etc) in the vicinity of your work space?
Some RF type devices can be particularly sensitive/influenced by near by electronic devices.
Depending on the wireless mouse you are using, try moving the reciever(usually the charger)as much as the chord will allow, away from the monitor etc.
Beyond that....are you in a multi-unit housing situation? (ie neighbor influence)

No, I don't think it's anything like that Kris. Like I said, I went and got another different cordless mouse, and it's doing the same thing.

no Charlie, I haven't upgraded anything here in the office, and my nearest neighbor is 300 feet away. The first mouse had a usb like a little thumb drive that plugged right into the back of the computer. This new one plugs in there too but the receiver's on a cord. I'll try moving it farther away.

I think a clue is that it happens intermittently.

appreciate the replies guys, hope I can solve this one!

My project team all received new Vista Business computers with wireless keyboards and mice Tuesday, and we have all had that same problem. I demanded my old "wired" mouse back, actually.

We also had a funny situation where my wireless keyboard would interface with the computer of someone sitting about fifteen feet away in the next cubicle, and vice versa. After a few screams of "My computer is possessed!" we worked that one out, but the issue with the mice has not gone away for those who kept the wireless ones.

Hey! Found out my mouse problems were from my Anti Virus program updating itself! I set it to only update early morning .. no more problems and I'm mousing away happily now.

yep Lewis, I've been trying out many different wireless mice and have had problems with all of them. Maybe it's time to go back with a wired one.

Someone on one of my Construction Forums mentioned that Updaters might be hogging resources, I checked to see which of my Updaters were turned on and found my AV was.

Really glad I got that figured out.
