File location help
-
I sent myself a .skp to home this morning, came home and opened it up to start working. Rather than do a Save As... I just hit save and closed. Now I cannot find the file anywhere. I did multiple searches and nothing, nada Evil or Very Mad
Where should I look?
Thanks for any help. -
not on the recent files list?
-
I just did the same thing (though I usually never open a file directly from an email)...it saved the new back to the email attachment?!? I didn't think that was possible...?
Is your work there Boo?
-
Nope and what is even stranger is what opens from the email file now.
The file I sent home is called Bell & Gadget.skp
I opened it, worked for a while then hit save and closed.
Now when I open the file from email, the same email, it opens as Bell Gadget (2).skp (Not Bell & Gadget (2).skp) and it is the original I sent home. No new work showing. What is up Question

Eric,
When you open a file from e-mail, the mail client saves it to a temporary directory deep in the bowels of your User account directory. If you then do a Save As, the File Save dialog in the application will open to the same temporary directory where the file was previously saved, and you can take note of it, or if you have the Send To X Powertoy, you can save the path to the clipboard. I just did that with an e-mail attachment, and this is the path:
C:\Documents and Settings\Gully\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\W960DOUG\filename.ppt.Once you have the path in the clipboard, you can paste it into the Run dialog and open an Explorer broswer window on the directory.

I tried that too Gully and when I hit Save As it took me to a recent folder I was using yesterday, not some far away place like usual.
Grrr. -
No, I mean do the following:
Go back and open the .skp from your e-mail. Do a Save As from SU. Let's say it offers to save the file as Bell Gadget(3).skp. Take note of the directory.
Now navigate to that same directory and look for Bell Gadget.skp, which should be the first file of the series, the one you want.

I just did a search for Temporary and got a few Temporary Internet File folders, searched all of them and nothing.
I am beginning to think it is gone. I did not lose too much work and honestly I have spent more time searching for it than I did making changes but I just want to know where it went. -

That is what I did and the directory is only 2 folders off my desktop.

Yeah, save-as on my set up went to "my docs"...not the email. I suppose since I'm using outlook express to download my email from my web server might have something to do with my save situation...?
Hope you didn't get too far...oh well, my experience (plenty of it :`) is: second time thru is faster. Sorry, Tom.

That's weird. I'm using Outlook Express, and as I just posted, it comes up with a path down deep in the Documents and Settings branch. I've used this technique at home and at work (using Outlook) a number of times, and I can typically find the temp file.
Sorry that didn't work.

Same here. I am really wondering why it is not happening now.
Oh well, I am in need of sleep.
Thanks Tom & Gully, I appreciate you hanging with me on this. Who knows, it may show up tomorrow.

GOT IT!
Gully, I went to a different email, opened a .jpg that I sent myself a couple days ago and did a save as. Noticed the path, almost identical to yours except OLK63 on the final file, and there it was.
Thanks a gazillion. Mr. Green
Me happy now, me go sleepy.Edit: What makes no sense to me is when doing a search with the name on the hard drive, where this temp folder was, it did not show. I even expanded the search to show hidden and temp folders. Oh well, I have it now. Mwaahaaaa.

Go figure.
