Wondering if I have broken a rule of etiquitte here by posting the SU file as well as a jpg of my amatuerish furniture pieces. I see most everyone else posting only "stills" of their stuff and not the SU files. Was wondering if it is storage capacity, protection of your work, or some other issue. I like to have a lot of my stuff from home available to me for posting, and so upload a lot of stuff to my storage at my website so I can get to it when I'm goofing off on my day job.
My stuff is just play, so I don't care if someone who can benefit from it downloads it for their own use. Fact is, that'd make me happy. But, like I said above, my stuff is amatuerish in comparison to some of the stuff I've seen here. -

There is a great difference in knowledge and skill in this forum and that is one of its great strenghts. Cannot see any problem posting here from your server. If you are willing to share sketchup files that would be extremely helpful to some.I think as more woodworkers get into sketchup, even Fine Woodworking is doing it now, the more people will be able to benifit from your models.

I think a lot of us are waiting for a better system of uploading and dispensing the models... like categories...
personally I am... I have a lot that I have built and will share... I have uploaded some... but we are a new forum and just finding our way... we're always looking for people ideas..

Jerry -- It is very nice of you to share your SU models. When you attach one it works out that you are sharing it with others. If you were thinking others would only look at it and not save it for potential use in their own models, then you are mistaken. Many of us have large component collections gathered from SU files others have posted in the various SU forums.
So what I'm trying to let you know is, if you are okay with others using your models to add detail to their own models then continue posting the models. You certainly are not obligated to do so and I think almost everyone appreciates seeing (and potentially saving for later use) the models. Please do include a jpg image. Many people will not bother to download and checkout a skp image without some sense that it will be worthwhile.
Most of us do only post the jpg's unless the posting is in the Components Forum. By posting jpg's alone we are allowing others to see and comment on our work without giving it away. The generosity of those who are willing to 'give away' is certainly appreciated, but there is nothing wrong with not providing the model file. Nobody should feel obligated to share their models. With regards to etiquette sometimes you'll see a jpg-only posting where others may start asking for the model file so they can use it in their own models. To many of us posting such a request in a thread can be rude. It has the effect of making the original poster feel obligated to share and can 'put them on the spot'. It is probably better to make such a request by private message.

Apart from what Ross added (and mainly about generosity) sometimes the reason for not posting skp files here is that those having created them created them for clients and they're just simply not supposed to give away something they got paid for as an individual solution.
So sometimes there are skp files sometimes there aren't. As Ross said, in the Materials Components Styles forum it is essential to share an skp - since that's what it is for. This is a "Gallery" and in galleries you mainly find pictures. Still it is okay with everyone if you also share the skp files, as well - there are no such "rules" here.
And thanks for sharing - anything you have, anything you may find interesting for us!

Cool. Thanks for the replies. I've been away from home and computer access for several days so haven't gotten back sooner.
I figured there were a variety of reasons, not the least of which being keeping your real "work" from being borrowed.
If someone can gain some insight into techniques or if they even wanted to use the stuff I've posted as plans for making a piece of furniture, that is fine with me. It has been awfully muggy in my part of the woods lately, so my woodworking has slowed down. Being able to design and "build" pieces in SU in air conditioned comfort is almost like being in the shop. And it helps to work out problems I might encounter when I actually go to build one of the pieces, saving wood and time.
