Google Earth Pro
-
Hey everyone,
I just talked my bosses into getting me Google Earth Pro. I was under the impression that I would get colour maps, when I 'get current view' from the pro version... but apparantly I am mistaken? I still only get B&W images... and it seems that I can't take images from as high an elevation as the regular version which is just bizarre...
any ideas?

Yes, the black & white terrain/image layers are by design...they're meant strictly for alignment and get stripped out if/when you post a geo-located model to 3D Warehouse (if the layers remain locked). If you want the color terrain and still want the model aligned, then after you Get Current Image you can save as image from Google Earth and import that.
What I will do if I want a geo-located model to post to 3D Warehouse/Google Earth and I want the roof, for instance, to have color is to Get Current View, then save as image (for the color image). Once I have the color image, I'll import it and then sample it onto the roof...or if I needed to build up a level terrain for placement in Google Earth, I'll project the color image onto a raised/level plot object. That looks very good in Google Earth.
I'm not sure why you aren't able to get images from higher elevations... I'll look at that and let you know.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,

Tell the Google Moderators to update the imagery in SketchUp to full color!

Ah I understand what you mean now. A few things...first there are no Google "Moderators" on this forum...a moderator is someone who "polices" a forum and acts as guardian for the information being shared i.e. a moderator would remove spam from a thread. But this is a public forum created by a non-Google citizen, who's done a great job by the way.
Second, I am a Google employee working on SketchUp so no moderators are needed to get info into the team. That is why I am here...to help people and to learn what problems people are seeing, or what features people would like to see in the future.
Third, the reason that color, geo-referenced terrain data is not down-loadable, even in SketchUp, is that it is paid for terrain content. The purpose for using this data in SketchUp is just for creating to-scale models using the proper location and terrain elevation.
I hope this all makes sense, and that my tips for importing color information are useful.

Hey Craig,
Thanks for the tips! I ended up using the save as with google earth (as this model is for office, and promotional use, it cannot be shared and has to be extra high quality) but! anyone interested, can check out my work at (sorry for the poor quality...their choice not mine);

Go easy on me, this is my first project in SU that I started a year ago, and have had to redo probably once a week!
Thanks again!

I would have said that GE Plus is not a very good value, unless you want slightly higher resolution images. Pro has significantly higher resolution output, measures area, and apparently the animation export is now built in (you used to have to buy additional plugins).
What bothers me about GE is the licensing...even the pro version has restrictions that could be construed as completely forbidding the licensee from doing "professional" things with it, like placing a work of architecture in site and using this for public demonstration (although it is possible that the wording only prevents the licensee from repackaging the presentation or the data and calling it, say, Lewis Wadsworth Earth). With the free version, you potentially violate the license (as I understand it) if you use GE to locate a coffee shop and then tell your friends how to get there. Furthermore, the free version features advertisements within some of the information balloons (you can turn them off in Pro...but has anyone really noticed these things anyhow?).
I like NASA's World Wind, now finally beta-testing a cross-platform Java-based version. Here's a comparison with GE:

WW is free and completely open source/open use, but won't import your SketchUp files the way GE does--although there are a few people working on that.

Bruce, there is a free video tutorial at go-2-school.com called "The Sketchup Show #17: Sandbox Part Duex" it shows how to use the imported image from GE (the color one) as terrain texture.
