I feel almost like im tainting this forum before its even started, but here it is.

Why dos everyone have those UPVC double glazed windows? i dont get it at all, theyre just ugly and unsuiting of nearly all houses and cost a bomb as well.

can someone whos more used to dealing with housing related things please explain why these abominations are so popular.

Because they are actually cheaper than timber double glazed windows and require no maintenance. They perform pretty well for the cost.
A softwood timber frame will require painting/staining at least every few years.
Hardwood frames are much better and require less maintenance but are very expensive in comparison.

There is the whole sustainability issue which is another discussion 😄

I'm obviously quite out of touch (not that i was ever in touch) with the price of windows.

I'm almost motivated to try and find an alternative now ponder

well my initial searching turned up a material called timbercel. Its PVC mixed with recycled wood. I gather that you can get windows made from the stuff although I haven't found any examples yet, or how much it costs. Looks a lot nicer than upvc though 👍
