Paul Wilson's 'calm at work' book
-
Greetings from sunny Newton Le Willows.
Loads of stuff in this forum is in some way giving advise to others. I’m pretty new to Sketch Up so apart from a couple of ‘tutorials’ I posted on the other forum, I’ll wait until I have something useful to offer on that subject.
Some ideas on another topic that may interest others, in the area of ‘self help’
Years ago, August 1998 to be precise I was well and truly p…ed off at work, great home life, but work, well??
In August 98 I was going on holiday to the Cotswolds, UK and stopped off at a motorway service station for a break in the driving, popped into the book shop and bought Paul Wilson’s ‘Calm at Work’.
Instead of fishing, walking visiting beautiful gardens I stayed in and read the book for 3 days front to back.
As a result of the advice in the book I ended working on a mantra.
My initial one went something like this and over the years it has been adapted in areas that I felt were necessary
I really enjoy every single day of my life.
I wake up every morning felling happy and positive
motivated and relaxed and
really looking forward to the day ahead.
I will achieve anything that I set my mind to, and at present
I want to radiate calm and confidence to everyone around me.
I want people to see me as calm and confident positive and motivated and with
standards well above average.
I live every day to the full.
I enjoy now.
I feel really happy with my life and achievements to date
and I feel really lucky being healthy and alive.
Having fun is an important part of my day.
The first acid test was returning to work. I told myself that when I woke up for work that day I was going to smile. It worked.
I told myself I was going to look forward to working that day. I did.
Dealing with very awkward (well that was toooo PC) was a regular part of the day. So the test was to feel an inner calm when dealing with these people. Well that worked to. Only ever failed once but they were a complete and utter a..e. Outwardly I was spot on.
And the story goes on an on and on.
Did it work. You bet. 100% of the time. Well no. What percentage. Got to be 98%.
What has been the greatest of pleasure is chatting to friends at work and passing on the book details and to good friends even giving them one. Bought one for my son in law.
Some of them have really benefited from it. I mean REALLY benefited from it just like myself.
What’s the name of the book again
Calm at work by Paul Wilson.
Just a thought
Alan.
PS I’ll be away for a few days from any computer and will pick up my mail at the weekend if anyone wishes to gab on the subject.

Hi Mike,
Glad you are going to read it. It has made a great difference to my quality of life, and given me the confidence to do things that I never though possible. In other threads in this forum people have mentioned for example that it was later on in life that they built up their confidence, and that they were held back because of it. I would put my hand up to that. I was 48 before I bought this book. I had bought other 'self improvement' type books before this one, but Calm at work did it for me.
Dealing with a massive work load prior to retirement became a breeze, doing stuff like standing in front of large group of people giving a talk was something I would run a mile from. I actually put something on that required me to do this. I'm not saying I was good, but I was inwardly calm, enjoyed it, and the event went down very well, and I had a smile on my face because I knew that I have cracked it.
And the story goes on and on.
I was chatting to our hairdresser the other day and mentioned the book to her. She said that she would love to read it, so I gave here my dog eared copy.
I wonder someties if the best time to read a book like this is when you feel you really need it. I did and it worked and so is the story from other friends.
I'm happy to gab on this subject either on this open forum or via pm.
Cheers
Alan
PS When I returned to work after reading the book, I put at the bottom of the report that I had to complete at the end of each day.
'Aiming to deliver a quality of service second to none'
It was my clear statement of my goal at work. Clear as a whistle. Bring it on.It took me to a completely different level and one that I am always aiming to aspire to.
