SU never ceases to amaze me.

I was asked to offer a design for a studio. All they sent me was 2 x .pdf files, a floorplan and an elevation. There were no dimensions on the floor plan but the elevation had one dimension of 9'.
So I made an image file from the .pdfs and imported the elevation into SU. I then measured the 9' dimension and resized to scale. I then imported the floorplan image and lay it next to the elevation and resized till they matched.
I then created my design over the rescaled floorplan and sent it off, they loved it.
Today I received the original .dwg of the floorplan and imported it into my SU file - would you believe I was 3" out!!! the building was approx 80' x 80'
Not bad SU

In 2000 we have dug out a Roman cemetery chapel with some relevant remnants even of the springs of the vaults. As we measured, the vauling should have been some 372 cm high from the floor level.
Then I modelled it in SU and it came out to be 369 cm high. That's just 3 cms - less than 1% - difference. It amazed me but at the same time I was glad because my theory of the (re)construction of the building seemed to be proved.

too love this software... it's simply amazing the ease of use and the endless possibilities...
every single 3D architecture program that has ever came out, I have tried... and I was looking for something very specific... I use curved walls in my home designs, and I was looking for something that would not restrict me in wall creation, some came close with arcs and round walls... but they didn't make the curves that I make, and they did not connect well with the rest of the house... Autocad Arch Desktop 2006 came through finally... but the price and the learning curve are steep...
but SketchUp... it came through with flying colors... DWGs ease of use... rendering... grouping and naming on the fly... and the curves... all mine... completely as I envision them... no restriction...
I just can't begin to say how much I appreciate having it everyday... and I can't wait to see how far is goes...

SU isn't my first take on 3D modelling, the programs I tried before seemed so tedious to learn and use. Ever since starting with SU I look at things differently. My GF says I'm a little distant sometimes, that's when I'm working on something in my mind to figure out how I could do it in SU.
I've had some ppl comment on SU in a derogatory manner, those times I try to show them the usefulness of SU, however 9/10 they stick to their first take on matter, I then just laugh at them.

I would like to take this opportunity to say something i realized a couple of weeks ago: SU brought back the pleasure i always felt drawing and designing by hand, in the pre-computer days.
i studied architecture in the 70's (yes, in another century, young turks) and people used to say i was a good draftsman. i had real fun drawing with tracing paper, rulers, pencil, china and the like.
my sketches are ok so i developed a design method (for my own use, that is) that consists of going back and forth between free-hand dwgs and the computer, usually vectorworks. an unbalanced method as most of the fun, if not all, was on the free-hand side of it.
not any more. so much so that my partner/wife nags me at times for getting too much into the SU dwgs and forgetting other aspects of the design itself.
i am glad i am not alone in this.
best to all and have fun sketchupping!

My ex is doing Landscape Architecture at uni. I told her I was using Sketchup - never heard of it was the reply. She was using Rhino, then later she was using Vectorworks, she told me the other day she is about to start using SU - because everyone else is using it
I offered to help if she needed tutoring on the program, she laughed and said I would regret making such an offer, no I won't I said.
I still haven't received a request for tutoring
