Listing objects in a defined space

Hello, I'm trying to streamline a process that involves listing lots of components along a vertical axis. I thought I might be able to do this with the XYZ in generate report but it appears it gives only the components interior XYZ.
I want to list the components that exist inside an 8" diameter, vertical column in the order they appear from lowest to highest.
So if I had Comp A, Comp B, Comp A, Comp D in a stack the desired result would be "A,B,A,D"
Does anyone of have any suggestions on how best to accomplish this?
