Any way to Prevent 'Unexpected File Format' Error?
-
I have been working on a site model with around 6 simple buildings in it which were xrefed into the site model using the Xref Manager plugin. I have never had any problems with this plugin before but recently when I tried to open the site model I got the dreaded 'Unexpected File Format' message and it would not open the file.
Luckily I was able to recover the backup file and then narrowed it down to one particular xref that was causing the error when it was reloaded in the model. I have solved this by importing rather than xrefing in the buildings and this seems to have fixed it for the moment.
This has however led me to lose confidence in the Xref Manager plugin as it seemed to be this that was causing the problem. Had I not been able to recover the backup file (which I have since read has happened to many people) then I would have lost much more work.
I am wondering if anyone else had problems like this with Xref Manager?

No, I don't use XREF. One method of doing this is to "save as" the building component under the contextual menu. That way (rather than import) the building can be reloaded from the menu and will appear in the same location and orientation (given that you haven't messed with the axes, or the overall position in the building file).

I don't use Tig's XREF Manager any longer, it's good but I ran into problems when the items referenced list became too long and it registered a single item multiple times if it was used in another model that itself was referenced again.
I now use Cross Reference Organizer, it's not free but it suits my needs.

Ok, thanks for the replies.
I will have a look at Cross Reference Organizer.
