How to create a twist that turns on itself?

I am having a real hard time wrapping my head around how to create the shape in the attached drawing.
I have been trying to using curviloft but I can't seem to get the twist to work out properly and I don't fully understand how manual editing in the "Properties of the Edited Junction" window works. Would anyone happen to know a workflow that I could use to make this work?

If I had to than SubD (or Artisan) and Vertex tools is what I would use. Toughest would be to make the curve for that object.

Finally had the time to play with this a little. It looked a little challenging..... it was...Posting a pic of results. Will say it's kind of hard to see exactly what shape your shooting from in your sketch. Here's my "workflow"... more or less.
Drew the ellipse upper left native SU. Ran Tig's Split Sausage on the flat faces. Twisted the ring with FredoScale's Box Twist function. Side note here, the original ring was about 6' x 10', scaled it up 100% percent before twisting.
Twisting the ring messed the quad geometry up big time. Had to spend time cleaning things up with VertexTools. After cleaning up the mesh used QuadFace Tools to check for any issues with the mesh also used it's Flip Triangulation function to get a little more even look to things. Creased the two inner edges of ring with SubD's crease tool then ran SubD and there you have it.
To get the two rings on the right I just stretched copies of the original ring and varied the amount of twist for each one.
Was kind of fun messing about with this, hope it helps some. It will probably take some experimenting to get the exact result your looking for.

Good try at it Box. Fell back to twisting with FredoScale cause my attempts twisting with Vertex Tools weren't working so well. Need to do a little more practice with Vertex Tools since it shouldn't mess up the mesh in the process.....
