Sketchup 2016 Question:

Does anyone know how to eliminate the "merging multiple items might be slow" dialog box, aside from ceasing the attempt to merge multiple items?

That warning comes from Dynamic Components, doesn't it? Try closing the DC Windows before which ever operation you are attempting.
