Automatic Component Replace
-
Hi everyone!
Long time Sketchup user and forum lurker here - I love and appreciate so much of the work you guys have done. You really make Sketchup fantastic!
I'm a freelance archviz-er and currently am considering splitting time between my home town of Perth, Australia and Rio de Janeiro (I have a lovely lady there!). The great thing of course is that I can take my work with me fairly easily, thank God!
My plan at present is to leave my semi-powerful desktop in Perth for rendering purposes and just take my laptop with me to Rio for modelling. It would be wonderful if I could work up models with low-level detail instances of components (2D versions or low poly 3D), and then send the model back to my computer in Perth, and run an extension which would automatically find high-poly versions of those components and swap them in place of the low poly ones.
Perhaps we have component file definitions like "Basic_tree_LD.skp" and "Basic_tree_HD.skp" in the same folder, and we can ask the plugin to switch HD for LD and visa-versa?
I'm not sure if an extension that can do this already exists? If not, I would be happy to help pay for some development on this if anyone would like to take on the task.
I think this would really help me and anyone else who needs a bulk component replace solution.
Thanks in advance for your help and all your great work to date!

I'd have a go with something like Ghost comp http://sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=GhostComp and Splashtop http://www.splashtop.com/
If you can get it working from your bedroom to your lounge it'll work from Rio to Perth.
There are renderers that can substitute components too. -
And for the fun the crazy Random Component Replace by Sdmitch for more variety!
So a simple component line(s) or cube(s) can be replaced by any family of component(s)!Have happy reconstruction! Here a simple 234 cubes remplaced by the 4 tortured family ones!

Something like this?

I've looked for this kind of functionality as well before, the way I would like to see it is not by having bounding boxes representing the high poly model, but rather a low poly version thereof.
There is "ProxyView" and "GhostComp" (already mentioned above) that can give you the functionality you're looking for, but they both have a bounding box representation of the component, not a LP version you can link. I was not aware of "Componet Swap" demonstrated above by sdmitch...
Then there is "Matrix Proximity", plugin that can change the component based on proximity to the camera, this in itself doesn't do what we want, but perhaps the plugin can be adapted to suit?

Thank you for the feedback team, I will study this more very shortly and report back soon!
