Can I drape lines without destroying the original terrain?

Say I have a terrain, and wish to suggest several road alternatives. I could draw my roads quickly in 2D above then drape down, then change material for the draped areas. However, this gets messy quickly and my terrain is increasingly broken.
I could also make a copy of the terrain each time and move it up 0,1 meter, then drape this, which works fine. However this solution is annoying as the terrain is huge and takes a while simply to copy.

Is there any tool/plugin/clever way to drape a line/shape quickly without affecting the terrain that you drape onto, but instead having the new draped terrain appear in a separate group, (which I can then move up 0,1 to avoid material interference)?

Why don't you just drape the road then copy the road and undo the drape then paste in place outside the terrain group and then assign it to a different group or layer ?

What I usually do Is copy the terrain into a new layer and then drape. I use layers+scenes to show different terrains+roads

the road elements need to be in a different group not to interact with terrain. Use a thickening plugin to give sides to the road or whatever it is, which reach down or intersect terrain so it is not a just a magic carpet floating above.

But if you must model the terrain for cut and fill as is always done in reality it gets complicated and, short of more advanced software, careful modeling is required. Always save a group of the original terrain for later adjustments and reference.
