In the OpenGl section of preferences that Ely mentions see what options it gives you for AA in the box.
You can select a different one and see which works best for your system.

Yes... sort of an improvement, but not great. The jagged edges are smaller but everyhthing looks a bit blurry. Why is this the best Sketchup can offer in this day and age??

The quality of the onscreen image varies depending on many things, mainly your settings, the graphic card and it's driver and the monitors you use.
I have perfect lines on one monitor, slightly fuzzy on a second and lightning strikes on my 3rd.

You can play with NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL settings for SU app. and make it much better.

Thanks all. I adjusted Nvidia settings for highest quality and did the other tweaks in Open GL. It's better, but still not a patch on the sharpness of other CAD programmes. I have a top-of-the-line ASUS gaming laptop with 16 GB of RAM, great graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 870M) and all the bells and whistles. All other programs look great, but Sketchup still looks last century...

Is this some deliberate policy of theirs to try and make us buy the Pro version? Or they just don't care? Or is because I'm working with small objects (mm scale) and it's supposed originally to be for designing houses and stuff?

It doesn't look like a CAD program because it isn't a CAD program.

Pro is the same with Make in terms of views, edges etc.
                  No is not the scale.
As Box said, it is a bit random on each configuration.
Believe it or not, I kind of have the same problem like you, with my new GTX 770 . The old one, Nvidia 8600GT, was showing the smoothest thing you could achieve. I don't know why.. I was really surprised by the difference, but so far I couldn't figure it out.
I have learned to let it go and export bigger images-that makes things look smoother.

It's not the scale. And output is a different matter. Lucky on Windows you can change it. On Mac you have to input a script which then lowers performance. I think it IS a "policy", but serves no purpose, except perhaps to save money.

Thanks for the settings. I have been there and played a bit but couldn't make it better.
With these new settings seems a bit better.
Maybe a test would show how it works for each of us. Export your image as 1600Xn(n under 1600) and let's see how smooths it is.

Ta for the suggestions. I tried the Nvidia settings but they didn't improve over the best I had got.

Re. cotty: CAD stands for Computer Aided Design. If Sketchup is not a CAD program, what is it?

Even so, that's not an answer to my question, which surprisingly not even the resident Gurus seem to know: How come other computer design software is so much better with sharp clean lines than Sketchup? I love Sketchup, would just like it to look as good as is currently possible with 2015 software and computers. Is that too much to ask?
