Extrusion of the stringers problem
-
hi,
i´ve been trying to extrude stringers of my stairs with tools on surface and joint push
pull rubies, but i´m somehow lost in the setting of TOS ruby and ca´t finish it.
i´d be grateful for any help on how to do it please.
first, it looks easy, but when i find curved stringers i´m lost
thanks!
note: the skp model is attached below

How are you using tools on surface? Did you get the basic shape of the stringer how you like it? If so, now what are trying to do with it?

hi,
i make stringers with curviloft ruby , i´m sure there must be many better and
easier ways. i like to make triangular patterns on both sides of stringers.
tools on surface ruby is great, but a new one to me.
if i do stringers with straight lines, and fill them with triangular patterns,
and finally curve with shape bender ruby, the patterns might not fit the exact spot.
if there is is better way to do it, please do not hesitate to enlighten me.
thanks! -
Is this sort of what you are looking for?
Two images - one with treads and one with hidden treads.

It's not that simple. In the end I used a mesh. Lots of geometry. My plugin that builds curved treads divides each tread into 3 or 4 segments. You need to keep track of direction so that sections don't reverse. This happens when you end up in a different quadrant.

hi Gerry, a very nice work.
my goal was to cut/extrude identical triangular openings on both stringers.
, so i´d like to know how to do it more efficiently:)
i´ve done a couple of them, but i´s taken a very long time.
thanks for any inspiration!

thanks for an honest reply.
i know that´s not easy, but i hope that final technique will be very useful
for other sketchup learners too.
it seems like a simple job, but it´s not ...

Might this cutting operation be done by taking the same shape and using "intersect" operation?
Are your treads all one component. That would be a way to have that shape arrayed (copy out of the component to use in each intersection. Also is the stair consistent in the curve (a true circular arc /helix)? Is it possible to make one section of stringer with cut-outs and duplicate that component up the curve?

hi,
thanks for your patience and care.
unfortunately each step is slightly different, due to curved stringers, therefore
the triangular patters will be different on left and right side of the stringers.
i think the stairs are consistent, so i have to try your tip to make one cut-out, and
try duplicating it along sides.
a great idea!
