You are not supposed to work in Parallel mode except when you work from blueprints and you have your views matched or when you want to export images.

I always work on perspective myself, but I never heard it wasn't supposed to work in parallel...

The only problem with parallel projection is that you can't get inside stuff, I see no other reason not to work in parallel...

I definitely find it easier to navigate and visualize in perspective.

I made an assumption based on my workflow, so, you are right maybe there are folks that work in parallel mode all the time(and I wonder how do they do that!!).
But since you start Sketchup for the first time, the Camera is set in perspective mode. Things looks weird in parallel mode and also, the Clipping issue appears after orbiting and zooming around a couple of time.
I get to Parallel mode when I need to make certain selections or when I export images and it is also required for printing to scale or 3d exporting dxf dwgs .
Perhaps in architecture is used a lot more.

Hi! It is easier to make "box" selections when using parallel projection and standard views. In Blender 3D software for example parallel views are used very often. You need it for many things...3D from image etc... After using the parallel projection it can be forgotten ticked on. Perhaps then the problem shows up?

Yes, 3D printer doing it's work.

That image disappearing problem is called, in fact a "camera clipping" problem. It's not actually a problem but more an issue as if we hadn't got it we couldn't dive into walls or stuff like that.

The issue has to do with the position you are looking the model at and it's way more recurrent in parallel because in perspective you have a clear notion of where you are. Cycling from parallel to perspective modes might cause the issue if you get to close to model by zooming in a lot in perspective, and then you cycle to parallel and zoom out. As your camera is in fact very close to the model it clips the model either in perspective or parallel. However in parallel there is no distance to subject as there is no point (2 or 3 point) perspective. If you zoom out camera sticks to place but the parallel view get's smaller. In perspective camera moves away from the model.

That is why switching from parallel to perspective causes the issue but also corrects it if you know how to apply the right zooming.

Large models are specially prone to this kind of stuff happening.
