[Req] Similar groups to Components
-
how to replace the components is irrelevant really because u need to turn those similar groups into components first

Hi all
What we need ideally is something similar to TIG's explode to groups, which works like a dream. So you'd make one group. Run the script explode to components. All that was within the main group would be converted to a component that then could be instantly replaced.
I suppose the whole point of a specific component is that its uniform..
and doing it this way things more than likely wont start like that.just a thought..
it would be very handy, could be used for instancing trees etc..
many thanks

SketchUp does do much of this for you. If you have a group and decide that you want to make it a component instead, all you need to do is select the group and "make component". The dialogue will not appear because all of the properties are already in place. However, if you go to the in model tab of your component browser, you will find that you have a component called "group#1" and you can edit and change its name and other properties.
If the group had been nested inside another component then all instances of the group would automatically be replaced. However, if a group is nested inside of a component, editing the group will change it in all of the nested components anyway.

thanx for that... please read my first post

I read your post then and now. I gave you what I've got. If the information doesn't prove helpful in any way now or in the future, you won't have to use it.

we all know the accrobatics we can do with groups or components or apple pie when its inside a component in the first place, or that we can make one of those groups a singular (all those similar groups will not become components of the same instance), my request was for a way to make similar groups into separate components of the same instance...
