2D Image Export Resolution Limits
-
Hi,
I know there used to be a bottleneck in the form of high resolution images being downscaled to really low res when exporting 2d images. Think large aerial maps looking horrible in exports. This was widely known.
I haven't used ketchup for HR images in a while and was wondering if this has changed?
Can Sketchup now export high resolution textures when exporting 2d graphics? Did Sketchup 2014/ 2015 fix this?
I ask because I'm about to work on a very large model with hr aerial images and wondered if there are limits I should work around (using tiles?)

This isn't a proper test as I'm on a very old laptop and jpg screen grabs aren't exactly accurate, but it gives you an idea.
I downloaded a 10000pix image and dropped it into SU, exploded and exported it at 9999pix.
The results below are screen grabs from each at 100% and the original pic for reference (not full size).

jpg compression seems to still be pretty lousy in 2015. I only ever export png to get proper image quality (and convert to jpg in another program. Usually Faststone)

Results look promising!
That's excellent thanks for testing IT, it seems the limit has been lifted, only compression which we can work with, don't suppose you could add a one test on using PNG to compare whether it is as sharp as the original? Also, confirm that "use maximum texture size" is enabled in preferences. Finally what version sketchup?

Maximum texture is ticked.
SU2015
Side by side there is a difference but I have made no effort to be accurate.
Exporting an image that size brings this PC to its knees so I'd recommend you install SU2015 and make your own tests.

I did a quick test. Unfortunately, it seems to me the image quality is pretty bad in exporting at high resolution. Here's a small crop of a larger render. I exported the full image at 5000px (both originals are PNG, saved as jpg in another program for upload here.) It appears any time SU has to compress or enlarge the image, the image quality suffers.
You might have better luck using a rendering engine, most can handle rendering large textures with much better results.
