At the weekend I made some experiments with COLLADA and X3DOM. It would be interesting to do some tests with a huge model like yours. However these technologies are usable only in the latest Firefox, Chrome and Safari browsers, it might be interesting to give it a try.

If you are willing to share your model, I might try it tonight...

      Merci Gabor,
No problem sharing my model with you - assuming you keep it for yourself. It's not public yet, also because it's far from ready. Where should I send it to? Can I zip it (don't know yet, if that helps though.)? I'm on very slow adsl-upload connection here in "the jungle" - that's why.

Sharing a 3D model over a webpage is hard to do... You'll want to optimize every inch of your model. using various plugins available here, you'll want to make sure geometry is minimal. look at plants and furniture for the usual culprits of high geometry. Next you'll want to check you materials and make sure they are nice and optimized, even going so far as to use photoshop to optimize the images for web use. Of course you'll want to run your purge function in sketchup to clean the model up. Thomthom has some tools for eliminating extra geometry and cleaning up models.

after doing all of that you'll still hit a wall on files getting up in size like 50 megs. Revizto has a 3D web viewer, but it only works on their own website right now. I've spoken with them about bringing it to client side website use, they say they'll be working on it. Otherwise I highly recommend their main program Revizto Viewer.

I came across this app, "JPEGmini" the other day. Like what I can see so far.

That's been around for a while - but like with anything else, I guess it will be slow to introduce until each (at least major) browser will have full support.

Yeah, I'm not switching my site until it has more support. I wonder if it would help with ranks though?

I've been away a few days.
Did you have any succes with my model?

                    See you around

                      Hi Krisidious,
I've been purging in Sketchup only so far. And of course it's true that I have used large amounts of texture and many plants. So I'll work on that as well.
Thanks for the suggestion of Revizto. I tried it and the conversion is perfect. The representation in their viewer is good as well. Only the viewing possibilities I don't seem to get right. My model seems to fly away as soon as I use the hover button, without my mouse reacting to anything. So not sure yet.
I'll keep trying to find a good solution.

the software has collision detection. You'll have to set geometry to be solid before you can walk on it. this is done in the objects drop down menu.

with the mouse you click once on the screen to use the mouse as your head. then click again to stop using mouse as your head.
