Same here. I am using Sketchup 8. Not sure if I have the latest version of Bezierspline, but it is a recent version. After the second segment, no axis allegiance, and not much allegiance with arrow keys. I read the bezierspline pdf documentation, and the only thing I found was a recommendation to always draw a plane to help the polyline inference to a plane. When you press the left, right, or up arrow keys you change the control point black box color to red, green or blue, and you can unlock by using the Ctrl key as a toggle.
[What you can do is use the Sketchup line tool, draw your segments orthogonally, triple click select them, right click, and select BZ Edit Polyline, BZ Transform to, or, BZ Convert to. Transform and Convert have flyout extension menus for further options.]
Maybe this helps? -
Have you tried to make the same in a special view like "View Top" with Camera Parallel Projection ?

I was made this way - Top/Parallel. The same strange behavior with Polyline Chamfer and Polyline Divider. Drawing on a face helps indeed - thanks mitcorb!
