Sketchup Crashes: what to do about?
-
Drape is notorious for having a hard time with large models, and models with many very small faces. When I use the drape tool, I always save before draping, and I often only drape small amounts at a time. Then I save after each drape operation. Often you will find one area of the model that will crash. Sometimes I will hand drape a few segments of lines on the really difficult models.
Sorry about the crashes, hope that helps.
Do you by chance have a model you can share that causes problems? Or even just a screenshot of it, just so I can have a better understanding of the complexity of the model you are talking about?

Hi Chris, thanks to your interest.
This is a link to my model. I hope its enough to clarify this issue.

I hope that you submit all the BugSplats. Even if you submitted the same crash before, as it gives indications to the frequency of each crash.

I didn't submit all bugs, because i got tired of it after a while.

It is good policy to submit the Bugsplats, even if you simply send with no explanation of what you were doing. I usually report mine and try to reconstruct the steps. Often, it has been after using several plugins in succession. Interestingly, some of the splats occur some distance in time from the use of a particular plugin. And, interestingly, most of my models barely exceed say 10 megabytes.
Even on these small models, you can get "delays" or crashes, if the density of edges and faces is high enough.
Could you, or should you, call these crashes 'bugs' in the formal sense? -
I looked at your model and I couldn't get it to crash on intersect w/model. But that doesn't surprise me too much, that is pretty stable. It is often slow and the computer stalls, but it does not actually crash.
For drape however, that model is VERY typical of the kind of models that like to crash when using drape. For that, like I said, you just have to drape in small portions and save all the time.

I've never had a bugsplat on a mac in five years until I upgraded to SU Pro 2013. Had several now, in fact, I just started a new visual, drew a rectangle, typed in 16', 9' and it crashed! Bit worrying!

Hey Bowesy, did you submit the bugsplat report? If so, could you PM me you email address or name you gave on the report? I'll try to look at it and see if I can find anything.

Hello Chris,
I'll submit the next crash - mostly when it's at work it's not the first priority! I've never suffered Bugsplat in five years on a Mac - plenty on PC before that - and only since upgrading to SU Pro 2013 so hopefully it is teething problems. Cheers.

Hi Chris,
This is not exactly a crash as such but every time I go back open Layout and go to open a recent document, I get the drop down every time that states that there is a newer version of the drawing even when I know there is no newer version. It doesn't matter which button you click "OK"; "UPDATE" etc - nothing happens, it freezes. I have to quit Layout as it doesn't report a crash - reopen it and then go to the menu bar and open recent files from there.
It must be a bug as it has never happened with my previous versions.
Thanks. -
I already solved this issue. I just downgrade to Sketchup 6 and I didn't yet get this problems, at least, in that frequency.
