Ive recently done a job for a car show that required a large number of cars in the model with some pretty upclose shots. They were then rendered in Maxwell for Sketchup. Athough, in the end, everything worked out fine, I wanted to throw myself out of the window about every 10 minutes as I watched the little ball spin and spin and spin.

The rendering was not the issue, it was the high poly count car models in the sketchup model. I have finally found a fantastic selection of models with decent detail through HUMSTER 3D, but they get really hard to work with.

Anyone else have this issue or have any idea how to work past it. I want to keep using the cars, but cant seem to get the polycount down enough to have more than a few of them in the model..

Use GoldiLocks 2.0 to narrow down problem groups and components in a model.

then either rework the area for lower polys of just delete it.

we did a job for a car reseller some time ago and the boss bought a couple of car from humster. at first try, the "low poly 3ds" versions of them crashed sketchup instantly.. i had to send a mail to them and they were very polite and sent me back a custom skp-low poly version.. still pretty hi poly, but at least sketchup manged them (after a furter cleanup of the geometry, in particular some utra hy-poly details, such as headlights). now with beta vray maybe you can use proxy, as far as i know also maxwell can mange proxyes, so maybe it's a bit easier..
